OLD ENGINEER WEIL
KNOWN IN ROSEBURG;
ONCE LOCATED HERE
In Monday evening's issue of the
Portland Telegram there appeared
quite a lengthy article written- by a
spetiul correspondent and dealing
with the life aud experiences of Wil
liam J. Sally, the oldest engineer em
ployed by the Southern Pacific Rail
road Company at the present time.
Mr. Sally began working for thu
Southern Pacific Company in the
year INTO, first an a laborer, later
us fireman aud afterward as engin
eer. He wan driver of the "J. B.
Stephens," which was the first loco
motive operating between Portland
and New Kra. at the time the line
extended only as far as the latter
city. Mr. Sally was engineer on the
Itosel'urg local train for many years
and has a wide circle of friends in
this vicinity. During his many years
of service, Mr. Sally has had but
three accidents and none of these
were of a flprious nature. The ar
ticle about Mr. Sally fs very inter
esting and will no doubt be read
with much interest by his many
friend in this part of the state.

While many opposed the issuance of
any bonds for road purposes for
wiiat they considered good reasons,
this paper feels confident that the
future will prove that the bonding
of both the slate and county vat one
of the greatest steps In progress that
has ever been taken in the state and
county, aud the benefits which v ill
grow put of it for this community
cannot be overestimated.

A well known and influential
farmer of the lower rmpo.ua country
came into this office one day last
week to pay for his subscription for
two years in advance, remarking
that he intended to keep on doing ho
for the reason that the Courier was
not afraid to express Itself on any
proposition without fear or favor
from anyone. Another one said: "I

Fifteen car loads of freight were
unloaded at Heedsport last week for
the people of the Lower Cmpqua
country, which shows that business
