formed friends that the engineering

ted to work on the Pacific Highway
under the county bonding measure

from the lands of the Oregon Cali
fornia Railroad Company. Much of
this money will also he available for

for judicial deliberation. It was
finally leit to the city attorney to
present hii opinion at the next meet-

The Red Cross campaign was offi
cially launched last evening, when

several captains and their lieuten

and the willingness with which the
business and professional men of
this city entered Into the labors of
this important work fully demon
strates the patriotism of our people,
when tho testing time comes. Out
of men selected lo visit tho good
people of Douglas County, to present
lo t lii-m the vital needs or the Red
Cross, 24 were present at this meet
ing, and tho absent members were
either out of the city, or were
obliged to be absent from tho meet
ing on account of Important matters
needing their attention. Let it be
known that these busy men liavo
freely oll'ered their time and ser
vices, neglecting their own business,
in order to visit every part of Doug
las County, furnishing their own
transportation and expenses, thus
proving their willingness to sacrifice.
In order that the xictims of the bat
tlefields may have every comfort In
stllfcrlng, or mayllup
for some, In the dosing hours or
lite, lor the Red Cross hospitals are
known among the soldiers of Europe
and every other country as the
"Htlghl Spot." and the boys from
our own country, away front home
and loved ones, will surely appreci
ate these bright spots, should they
be wounded In battle. Every mnn,
woman, boy and girl In Douglas
County will have the opportunity
and privilege of giving to this fund,
no matter how small the contribu
tion it will be thankfully received,
and a complete list of all givers will
he filed at head. uarters. Reports

Oakland that local organizations are
being formed at these points to co
operate with the countv manage
ment, and before Hie week Ib over It

county will have similar organiza
tions working. The work of the Red
Cross Is too well known by the peo
