KNOIiMOl'S TASK OV TIIK WAR Amii'din:,' ( the arrogant remarks of Orman prisoners tc (cnlly tiiKcii y the allied armies, the (iontian soldiers and !er nian people M'e evidently hciiijf woefully misled as to the existing conditions Those soldier prisoners seem to think that Knejand, F ranee and Italy are on the veljfe of collapse because of the sub marine activities, which they assert has cut oir supplies from th.Vse countries, and that separate peace lias been readied with Russia. They also imagine America to be a fat, impotent monster at;ainst whom they will in a few months levy an enormous war in demnity of perhaps forty or fifty billion dollars to fully recoup the Teutonic powers for their j;reat war expenditures, flerninn soldiers and civilians are evidently not allowed to know that the number of submarine victims per week has decreased nearly IiO per cent since the American flotilla.of submarine chasers and de stroyers has arrived on the field of action, nor that the allied pow ers are in no immediate danger of being starved into submission either on account of food supply or for other materials. Other reports say that the Hermans are fully obcessed (or hypnotized) with what is termed Ilindenbuiyitis. They fully be lieve that Ceneral Ilindenbiirp; is utterly invincible, and that his forced retreats on the western front are really only strides toward victory. Such a spirit prevailing there makes it all the more necessary for this country to rush its war activities in every de partment. The only hope for an early endinir of the war is to wield such terrific and telling blows against the Teutonic powers that the real conditions can no longer be withheld from the civilians and soldiers of those countries. When they finally realize that they cannot break the allied lines either on land or sea the beginning of the end will be in sight. A mighty effort on the part of this country will be needed in order to accomplish this. If we should fail to do our full duty we face the alternative of paying an indemnity so enormous that neither the present generation nor the next w ill see it fully satisfied.
