Positions for 31 such candidates -are open to application and will be filled probably at exanii: natliins to be held on June IS. Any person having one of the specialized oiciipations in which examinations are to be given, in addition to the other ordinary qualifications for en tering the service, may apply. . Orders to this effect were received this morning b'y I'apt. J. A. Buchan an, of j,he Fourth company. Coast Artillery, lie said those eligible to take the examinations' were civilians who had not previously been con nected "with the artillery, and who need not enlist until after they are successful. In this way, said the of ficer, those unsuccessful will be un der no obligation and their failure will not be made known. Should they obtain success, however, they will he required to take the regular physical examinations and submit to oilier tests exacted of the ordinary recruits. According to the orders, positions are open for two master electricians, .several engineers. 12 assistant en gineers, tour firemen, four raido sar geants, and three master gunners. The base pay is rated from $7."i a month for the-master electricians to $4i for the master gunners. Those selected will be attached to the regi ment of the coast artillery from Oregon. It is thought that the examina tions will be held at Kugene. Those wishing to enter the service are ask ed to correspond with Capt. YV. O. Williams. B40 Morgan Inilldlns. In explanation of his possession of the luxuries, "Hill mentions he fact that a recent pay day was one of the pleasing incidents at the barracks. Mi. Iiolan is well known in Rose burg and his many friends here are delighted to learn mat tie is sausneu with army life and that he is anxious to lay down his life, if necessary, to protect the good name of the I'nlted States. ' STATE tIME BOARD ' TO INSPECT DEPOSITS IN DOUGLAS COUNTY Members of the state lime board are expected to visit here within the next few days, to Inspect lhe lime deiioslts in Douglas t'ounty, was the statement made this morning by Hon. II. L. Eddy, according to a let ter which he has Just received from the chairman of the lime board. It is the wish of the members to took over all the deposits of lime rock that can later he mined and used. All of those who have lime deposits that they would like to have worked should . notify Mr. Kddy. who will mention it to the board, so they may visit the deposits. The state lime board Is putting into execution the law recently pass ed by the Legislature, making an ap propriation of $20,000 for mining the lime deposits, and providing for the use of prisoners In working the mines. After the lime rock is ground up it will be sold to the farmers fm fertilizing". The members of the M.oard will probably visit .Inckson County following their inspection of the deposits in this county. NEW UNION SCHOOLS MAY BE EORMED AT THE COMING ELECTION Several new union high schools and district consolidation schools may be formed in the county at the next election. A petition was re ceived this morning at the coumy superintendent's office, asking that a union high school be formed at Ktk- ton, to include districts Nos. 34, ibt 54, titi, 85, 86. 121 and :iX. The petition will be voted upon at the next election, and if passed, will be one of the largest consolidations of its kind in the state. On account of its central location, Elkton has great possibilities as a school center and the union school will include the grades and high school work, and give educational fa cilities to the country for miles around there. The union schools are steadily increasing in popularity and several more may be established In the county. Another consolidation hiph school to be voted upon includes districts 2 mid 9 4, Winchester and Wilbur. A movement has also been started for ioining the public schools of the "ilide districts. 12, 65 and 68. The :inion high school established there jas proved very successful and the listrict has greatly increased in alue. Another consolidation of nuh!ioschools may be'fbriled in the Talapooia country, with districts 17, HI and 60. For the past two years ltstricts 40 and 60 have been con olidated. under a provisional law temporarily, but it Is planned to make this a larger and permanent consolidation. r f hninlK'Mai Vs Omgli Remedy. The genuine spy or traitor will pretend to support the President and honor the flag. It is said that certain parties. whoso names are withheld, are quietly doing all they can to defeat the county bonding proposition be cause they think that Keed squirt will be benefitted by having a road down the I'mpqua from Scottsburg. Winking fin KMf Superintendent Kirk, .who Is In charge of the erection of the new Ft .leral building for the Cnlted States Government, stated this morn ing that the work of putting the roof on the structure will begin tomor row. The last of the stone to be used in the construction of the build ing atrived here yesterday and was lod'y transferred to the site of the new structure. Work on the build ing is progressing very satisfactorily, according- to Mr. Kirk, and the structure will be in readiness to turn over to the Government late in the summer.
