On a gravel bar projecting to
wards the center of the North Pnip
qua Kiver, about one and a half miles
below Hie spot where the man wait
last seen alive, the body of Narcisse
Gervais, who was drowned three,
miles above Winchester 2S days be
fore, was recovered by searchers at
8 o'clock Sunday morning.
One of the discoverers of the body
was Ike Gervais. the drowned man's
brother, who with a party of helpers
had been patrolling 1 he river bank
nearly every day since the tragedy,
when Narcitise Gervais ami Stephen
Short were spilled in midstream from
their boat. The party had passed the
same spot the evening hefure tmt I lie
body whs not then visible.
Immediately after the discovt
the men telephoned to Itosetturg ami
Justice of the Peace I. It. Kiddle and
several others were soon on theti
way to the scene by automobile. Cor
oner C. 11. Wade was absent from thr
city and the Justice of the Peace
acted as his deputy. He was accom
panied by Dr. George K. Houck, the
county health officer, and District
Attorney George Neuner. A coroner's
Jury named later was composed of II.

Sheriff George Quiue stated thiB
morning that all plans had been
completed for taking the war census
tomorrow . The registrars have all
been appointed, and in practically
every instance they have sent word
to the shcriH that they will serve.
"I'm expecting no trouble in Doug
las County," said Slieriff Quiue this
morning, "but we are prepared tor
any emergency that may arise. The
polls, or registration places, will bo
patroled. and any person who at
tempts to initiate un anti-conscription
propaganda will be promptly ar
rested. In a telegram received here today
from U. S. District Attorney Clarence
Heauies, of Portland, Sheriff Quiue
was instructed to telegraph to the
Portland official the names of all per
sons of couscriptlomible age who fail
to register. A I'nited States grand
jury has been summoned for duty
there on June 6, when the cases of
the "slackers" will be considered.
