afternoons and ev-eniugs make up
the social calendar. Commence
ment exercises this week have occu
pied a great deal of thought and at
tention. A number of afternoon
parties will be included In the
events of the next few days and
there will be no end of picnics, the
popular form of diversion for the '
present season. Many people are j
also thinking of vacancies and out
ing parties and several have long
trips planned, to spend the Hummer
months.

A delightful afternoon was spent
at the home of Mrs. II. C. Robertson j
lukt Monday, when hhe and Mrs. K.
I". Jones entertained a Tew of their
friends at a buttonhole liee. Delight- j
ful refreshments were served. Those i
present to enjoy the hospitality of
the hostesses were: Mrs. 1.. lioach,
Mrs. 1'. W. Andrus, Mrs. Lee, Mrs.
II. K. Hates, Mrs. A. A. Turnell. Mrs.
C. W. Moore, and Mrs. ltobertson
and Mrs. Jones. The dinner was pre
pared and served under the direction
of Charles Iteese, a well known ca
terer of this city.

In honor or Mr. and Mrs. F. P.
Junes, who will leave soon for Mon
tana to make their future home, a
number of Hoseburg people went 1o
Winchester Wednesday night, where
they enjoyed an old fashioned weinle
roast. A bonfire was kindled and the
festivities continued far into the
night. Those present were: Mr. and
Mrs. F. I. Jones, Mr. and Mrs. It. C.
ltobertson, Mr. and Mrs. L. Koach.

automobile truck- and a dandy time
prevailed.
Merry Workers' Club.
The Merry Workers' Club, of Look
ing Glass, met with Miss Mildred My
ers, Thursday. May 31. Fourteen
members ami two visitors were pres
ent. Miss Gladys Jackson and Mrs.
Jennie Audrey were guests of the
club. The afternoon was spent very
pleasantly In chatting and crocheting
and Miss Myers rendered some very
beautiful selections on the piano. At
tiie close of the afternoon a delicious
lunch was served by the hostess. The
club will meet on June 14 with Miss
Nellie Voorllics. Miss Voorhles has
just tlnished a very 'successful term
of school at Ilrewster, while Miss My
ers has just completed her schuol at
Ten Mile. Miss Grace Myers, who
was al.-o present, has just returned
from Mi'dford, where she taught dur
ing the past year.
Memorial Kvercises.
The Knights of Pythias lodge will
hold their annual memorial exercises
on Sunday, June 17, at the Odd Fel
lows' hall. It is expected that many
will be in attendance at this annual
serv ice.

ous around Winchester Hay. are be

observations. One day last week
fi.ur large bucks came down from
the hills and walked around the
town fearlessly, apparently sUing up
the garden patches. After spemliug
considerable time at this, they
walked off into the woods without
being molested by anyone, although
it is retained that L. S. Weeks, the
mayor of the town, and Kay Cun
ningham had quite an attack of buck
ague as the result of their appearance.

One night last week while fishing
out near the bar of the river, two
fishermen in order to save their
boats from being overcome by the
breakers, were forced to cut loose
their nets from the boats andvmake
for calmer waters. The nets were
taken-out by the tide, and the men
had given them up for lost, when the
return tide brought them in again.
They were recovered, but were in a
very bad condition. One of the nets
contained a seal, a salmon and a few
crabs. The seal becoming entangled
in the net was drowned. The men
had gone out near the bar for the
purpose of fishing for sturgeon.

conscience told him was right, are

cast his vote against the war meas
ure, for which he was so severely
censured and villlfied. the Courier
said that it believed that Senator
Lane had made a great mistake in
so doing, but that it did not believe
that he was dishonest, or was a
traitor to his country that he was
sincere in so doing and voted as he
thought was right. And so It is in
