Three Boats Sunk.
LONDON. June 1. The Admiralty
announced the submarining of the
American bark Dirigo, add the
drowning of the mate. The submar
ine attacked the Diripo without
warning, using deck guns. The Ger
mans then boarded the bark, ran
sacked her. and sank the ship with
boinhs. The Admiralty reported that
attacks, presumably followed by
sinkings, of the two American wind
jammers Francis M. and Harbara.

A contract was executed here this
morning whereby .Mrs. Mary A. An
derson and Mrs. Stella Talbott, of
Maryvllle. Calif., hae leased the
basement of the Methodist Episcopal
Church, ut the coiner or Main and
Lane streets, and will utilize the
same for a business? college.
Mrs. Anderson stated this morn
ing that the equipment for the col
lege had been ordered and would
probably arrive here iu time to open
the Institution on or before June IS.
Several courses will be taught and
tho college will rro doubt prove a
valuable asset to this city. Itoth
Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Talbott have
had many years of experience in
teaching and are thoroughly conver
sant wilh the conduct of a school
sin-h as thev intend to open here.
Tho exact date of the formal opening
of the college will be announced
later.

emy was held at Wilbur today. The
shaded grounds about the site of the

ed with no less than 6U0 people and
much time was passed in renewing
old friendships and acquaintances
and exchanging reminiscences of the
lung ago.
There were many present at the
reunion who had . not met for the
span of half a century, and they re
called vividly the days when they
were s-hoolinatfls together at the
old academy. The program, which
had been arranged under the direc
tion of .Miss Inez Mill"i'. and a num
ber of other prominent residents of
that vicinity, was one which will

participated. The visitors were
sealed In the school yard und on the
porch ot the present school building

scenes and happenings of the pioneer
college days at Wilbur, were unus

ing talker was applauded liberally.

That the fellow who was arrested
south of Ashland u few days ago
charged with knocking Private Adam
Garreu from a bridge spanning
Grave Creek, is "nuts," was the opin
ion expressed by Sheriff Jennings, of
Jackson County, who interviewed the
prisoner yesterday. The Med ford
Tribune this morning published the
following item regarding the prison
er, and the same will probably be of
interest to the Guardsmen and
friends of the injured man stationed
in this city:
The prisoner .who has stubbornly
refusesd to give his name or any in
formation about himself, is put by I
Sheriff Jennings and Acting Chief of
Police SC raw ford In the class of hu
man beings known as "nuts." Ac
cording to Crawford the prisoner has
not got sense enough to become clear
crazy.
Captain Todd .of Company I. who
arrived in the city Wednesday even
ing, could not give the authorities
any advice as to what charge to place
against the prisoner. The puzzling
thing about the arre.st is that the
crime was committed in a not her
county, while the arrest was made In
this county.
Captain Todd wrote to the colonel
of the Third Oregon Infantry Wed
nesday night and asked for advice
from headquarters as to what should
he done with the prisoner. He expects
an answer by Saturday morning.

rangements were made today for the
delivery of the first consignment or
material near Winchester. This ac
tion completely disproves the conten
tion made by a local publication lol

According to County Commissioner
V. F. St. John this morning, four
carloads of crushed rock would be
delixeretl at Winchester probably to
day and would be applied to the road
grade there al once. Other cars
will be handled as soon as ihe trans
portation is secured anil the material
loaded. In all as many as iM cars
may be delivered next week. The
contract for the entire Dm cars has
hern placed with the Kosehurg Sand
ic Crael Co., us was indicated in the
previous issue of The Review.

Judge O. W. Kiddle, winner of the
prire essay contest conducted by
Representative Chas. A. Hrand, of
(arden Valley, returned here last
night rrotn a trip as rar south as the
Calirornla line, where he made a
thorough 'nspection nr the roads.
Mr. Kiddle today furnished Ihe
Itevlew with a brief account of his
trip, hh follows:
," A brier account of my trip over
the Pacific Highway will probably
be of Interest to the people of Doug
las County at this time. As the
guest of Mr. W. 11. Gore, Joint Rep
resentative from Douglas and Jack
son counties, nnd Mr. Westerlund.

to the state line. I had been over
this road many tlinen during the last
iii; years, but the trip over the Im
proved highway was a. revelation,
nnd for skilful engineering. I do not
believe the road over this Siskiyou
mountains is surpassed In the world.
' The ascent of the Siskiyou road
begins at the old stage station which
pri'M-nta tho same appearance as It
did III years ago. The road Is taut
In graceful curves to the summit,
whli h Is six miles. Al no place on
the road does the grade exceed 4.2.
The road Is H feet .vide nnd.
strange to say, there Is not a blind
curve at any point. At one point
the road forum a loop, passing be
neath a beautiful concrete bridge.
Next the loop crosses over Ihe bridge
that also spans the railroad track.
There are three concrete bridges and
they are lonslructed in the most sub
stantial manner. The culverts are
also of concrete construction and
will last for all time. Over this
road Mr. Hole drove his heavy Pack
ard automobile on high. We also
met or parsed nil kinds of vehicles.
Immigrant wagons with poor teams,
and many automobiles. Indicating
that Ibis road is used for all kinds
of traffic.
"This road demonstrates the dif
ference between permanent and
scientific road construction and the
patchwork so nollcable In Douglas
County. A little over two years ago

and the result Is a pave.l nignway
from Central Point lo Ashland, a
distance of about 17 tulles. This
! paved road is HI leet wide. An Ini
! proved road from Ashland to the

withstanding these Improvements.
