Aifiiin we have reached the annual Memorial Day, when our thoughts turn to sweet memories of departed relatives and friends. To them and to the defenders of our country we pay another tribute of beautiful flowers, lierau.se of the jfieat war there is an unusual manifestation of patriotism and all honor will be shown to the fallen heroes. As yet our cemeteries contain none who have jmeii their all in the present great struggle, but there is universal heartache at what portends for the coming year. Ureal heroism has been known and honored in the past, but none greater than that displayed by those now preparing for action on the battle fronts in the greatest war the world has ever known. However, liie spirit of world-wide liberty still prevails, and though another Memorial Day may bring sadness to those bereaved, the world will hail as heroes those who may bo called and may their number be 1!W to meet "life's greatest adventure." Memorial Day, al though an hour of sadness, still brings into our lives the sweetest memories. It is well to recall the lives and the many cheering smiles and kindly deeds of those who lived among us and for us. We may still be cheered by the thought that they are now enjoying their greater reward. We honor ourselves by honoring their mem ory w ith a tribute of beautiful flowers. o Since their friends have prevailed upon Dr. Miller and A. J. Oddes to become candidates for school director there are two to be elected at the annual election on June 1H, let no one be misled in regard to either of them. lioth are known to le unalterably against the continuance of the present regime which has so seri ously handicapped our schools in the past. No introduction is needed for either of these gentlemen. Dr. Miller is the dean of our practicing physicians and has served on the school board for the past live years. Mr. (ieddes is a member of the Commercial Abstract Co., and is known as a capable and honest business man who is directly interested in the welfare of our schools, lie is an active member of the M. K. church and also takes an active part in public betterment as well .is in fraternal and civic affairs. Doubtless other candidates will be placed in the field in order to attempt to fool the voters. Therefore do not allow yourself to be misled. If you want to end the present very unsatisfactory con ditions, work for and vote for Miller and (ieddes. o A transaction of extraordinary interest was consummated in San Francisco recently when the C. I.. ISest (las Traction Com pany, of San I.eandro, California, closed a deal for the construc tion of $:iO.OOO,0(M worth of liesl tracklayer farm tractors with the Davis Sewing Machine Company, of Dayton, Ohio. It is inter esting to note that the machinery which will be employed to build these tractors at the Dayton plant has just completed a contract for the Kussian government under which :.(HMl,000 detonators and 1,00(1,00(1 shells were made. These machines w ill now be used to help the 1'nited States win the war by the construction of liest tracklayers, which will uncpieslionably play an important part in increasing the food supply of the Nation. The officer himself will be subject to Imprisonment if he fails to do this.
