utilization of the bodies of dead soldiers. Although dermaii olli

which is beinif operated for the purpose behind the western battle
front of the (ierinan forces. The London Times (weekly edition)
of April 20, quotes an article from l.n .Vin , of l-endcii, Hol
land, a portion of which follows:
"We have known fur lung that Cermans stripped their dc:id
behind the lirinjf line, fastened them into bundles of three or four
bodies with iron wire and then dispatched these Ki'isly bundles to
the rear. (lerman science is responsible for the ghoulish idea
of the formation of the Cerman Ollal I tilization Co., a dividend
earning company with a capital of !f I,(lll0,(l00, the chief factory of
which has been constructed 111(10 yards from the railway connect
ing St. Villi, near the llelgian Irontier, with (lerolsline in the
lonely, little frequented Kil'el district southwest of C'oblenl.. This
factory deals especially with the dead from the west front. If the
results are as good as the company hopes, another will be estab
lished to deal with corpses on the east front.
"The factory is invisible from the railway. It is placed deep
in forest country, with a specially thick growth of trees about it.
Live wires surround it. A special double track leads to it. The
works are about 700 feet long and 1 10 feet broad, and the railway I
runs completely round them. In the northwest corner of the
works the discharge of the trains lakes place.
"The trains arrive full ol bare bodies, which are unloaded by
the workers who live at the works. The men wear oilskin over
alls and masks with mica eyepieces. They are equipped with long
hooked poles, and push the bundles of bodies to an endless chain,
which picks them up with bit: hooks attached at intervals of two
feel. The bodies are transported on this endless chain into a long, !
narrow compartment, where they pass through a bath which dis
infects them. They then go through a drying chamber, and final
ly are automatically carried into a digester or great cauldron, in
which they are dropped by an apparatus which detaches them
from the chain. In the digester they remain from six to eight
hours, and are treated by steam, which breaks them up while they
are slowly stirred by nun hinery.
"From this treatment result several products. The fats are j
broken up into stearine, a form of tallow, and oils, which require
to be redistilled before they can be used. The process of tlisUllt
tion is carried out by boiling the oil with carbonate of soda, and j
some part of the by-product resulting from this is used by Cor- 1
man soapmakers. The oil distillery and refinery lie in the south
eastern corner of the works. The refined oil is sent out in small .
casks like those used for petroleum, and is of a yellowish brown i
color.
"There is a laboratory and in charge of the works is a ehiel
chemist with two assistants and 7.H men. All the employes are
soldiers and are attached to the hth Army Corps. There is a I
sanatorium by the works, and under no pretext is any man per- !
milled to leave them. They are guarded as prisoners a I their up-
palling work." i
The London Times says the foregoing was verified later by
Ilerr Karl Kosner, correspondent of the P.erlin ' A:i iin r. ',
who is quoted as saying, regarding this disposal of bodins: "The
fat that is won here is turned into lubricating oils, ami ever.vthing
else is ground down in the bones mill into a powder, which is used I
lor mixing with pigs' food and as fertilizer." !
