He did not come out of this condition until this morning, when he was able to brief ly tell r. Porter what bad hap pened. Ir. After the tax lien has been re moved, that part of the Oregon and California grant lands classified agricultural will be thrown open to settlement. That Is the gist of in formation contained In a letter re cefved from the Department of the Interior tbla morning by It. It. Tur ner, of the local L'niied Slates land office. M r. Turner sent an Inquiry to the department as to the status of the matter because of a largo ijumher of li tters from all over tbe Pacific Northwest forwarded to him by peo ple who are awaiting definite infor mation on tbe subject. In part his advices from the department are: "In reply will say Jhat as you can well appreciate from your' under- standing of the cae, it was imprac ticable to proceed further so far af any posilive action affecting titles was concerned, until after the deci sion of t he Supreme Court a few dayH ago. In the meantime, however. all the preliminary work so far as possible with respect to ascertaining the amount or taxes accumulated en the lands, has been done. Several ojicsllons of law are involved In this matler of tax payment, all of-whlch have been collated and submitted to tbe Secretary of the Interior and to the Department of Justice for dispo sition. Immediately these questions are out of the way, it determined favorably to the Immedhrte payment of taxes, we will he in a position to certjfy to the a mount anil correct ness of the taxes accumulated on the irroat bulk of tbe lands, there being comparatively small areas which will have to await further adjustment. In the meantime last season we classi fied something over Hoo.ono acres of the unsold patented lands of the grant. So fjir I am now aware, as soon as Hie tax lien can be removed, we will be In h posit ion to 'proceed to open that porlion of the lands i classified which have been classified las agricultural.
