But you may have noticed, too, as I did, that our little khaki chaps were far outnumbered. Do you think it would hurt your boy to be trained to take care of himself and others by know Ing first aid work? Could It injure him In any way to know how to pre vent accidents or to know what to do If they did occur; how to dress a wound: to splint a broken arm or leg, or to rescue from drowning, fire anu poison, or bow to control heni' orrhage? Would the knowledge or plants, animals, birds, fish and in sect life hinder him in his future out-door life, that is if you ever in tend that he shall get out of doore; Could the ability to tie many kinds ot knots and hitches, to make a camp, to fell a tree, to cut wood, to cook, to fish, to row, to swim, tu make things out of wood, metal and cloth keen him from being a busi ness man? Would it be a bad thing for him to know the points of the compass by the stars and the many other things that Nature hangs out tn the lost, or to be able to signal all sorts of distances or to receive and send wireless messages? Kin- ally, would it be a handicap if he were trained to obey, to take or give orders and to execute them, whether It was to hoe the garden or to land a trout?" HERE'S PROOF. (From the Gardiner Courier. j How it Is that w bear many y they r in favor of good roads and more of them, and when il comes to tbe test and a chance to get them, they prove themselves to be "slack ers?" Too many are so used to take advice and follow the lead of some one else, without doing any thinking for themselves, and tn many cases allow themselves to be dictated to and coerced to vote and act against their- better judgment. All public questions of any import should be discussed and studied and other opinions given due consideration, af ter which one should vote and act according to bis best Judgment, without prejudice, malice or passion. The issuing of bonds which the people will shortly be called upon to vote, for the purpose of building bet ter roads ia the state, and particu larly in this county, is one of the moat important issues we believe that has ever been presented to tbe people, and should be given careful study and consideration. It may be a very long time before the people of Douglas County will have a chance again to record how they stand for better roads throughout the county. Every district will be judged as they vote, whether they are progressive or retrogressive. Douglas County will have a chance on the 4th day of June to go on record in favor of better roads without any extra cost in taxes, or to remain In the t&me condition which she has been in, holding the title of having the worst roads in fhe state, and the people paying more taxes Chan ever for roads and still h'.ving the same t)ld roads to travel on. Those who have been asking the County Court to build roads for them wilt have a chance to prove that they were sincere in their request, by vot ing for the bonds and giving the court a chance to grant them. The County Court is often wrongly cen sured and blamed for not doing more for certain sections of the county, when it is impossible for them to do so for the want of funds. Now the people have a chance to remedy this state of affairs by voting for the bond issue, which will not only im prove tbe roads provided for, but It will enable the County Court to im prove to a greater extent the roads which are not mentioned, therefore giving all sections of the county good roads. If on account of the war the cost ofc construction of the roads are un reasonably high, the road building can be postponed excepting that which is absolutely necessary, until 1 time when conditions and cost should warrant the construction. The .w?oI wl lb have to tax themselves -or the upkeep of the roads, bonds or no bonds, and it will be more of a taxation than it will require to pay for the bonds. CI.tBE ITEMS. 4. Sir. Max Shellabarger was down from his home on Hurnt Mountain last Saturday. ' J. F. He took a bunch of young men is with him and they rejiorted having a delightful time. T. V. Gurney was out In his Ford last Sunday. He took several young people to itoseburg and all reported a mighty fine time. Mrs. Teresa Alexander visited last week with Mrs. K. S. Hlakely. John Alexander made a flying trip to Roseburg last S.onday and wen! down and back Wednesday with a team. K. T. Shrum went to Roseburg Wednesday, taking a load of dog wood and Oregon grape in for dec orations. Charles Harrison came out from Honey Creek yesterday. Mr. Itomane had the misfortune to hnrt his hand last week while splittfcifr shakes. Will SinKletott was over from Oak Creek last Saturday. Glide held Its crop survey meet ing last Sunday and there were not enough blanks for all farmers of the neighborhood to fill out. Al though extra blanks will not be needed if It keeps on raining.
