Children and flowers, Roseburg's i
proudest offerings for display, coin-j
hined In one etfort to overwhelm the j
carnival throngs today, and child
hood and flower never looked more
beautiful.
While the school children's parade
ban been a memorable feature of
each succeeding carnival, the show
ing today seemed the climax of all.
Perhaps it was the patriotic tone that
had its clearest message In the lines
of inarrhing boys and girls. There
was a realization of war, at least. In
every group and the demands of a
country in arms added still more
beauty to the ranks or children.
Over a thousand children marched,
nnd in the sunshine, long overdue,
the whiteness of the dresses and the
brilliancy of the flowers were as the
triumphal procession of spring. To
to the children's songs were added
the music of three bauds, while the
two queens, one of the carnival and
the other of the children, rode in
true splendor. The setting today was
fit for any queen and the disappoint
ment of yesterday was soon forgot
ten. On a prancing steed at the head of
the parade was Kafe Dixon, who act
ed as marshal. Following his was
the cadet band of O. A. C. Then
came the chariot of Queen VTa, who
with her maids occupied a float of
red. white and blue, one of the pret
tiest decorated cars yet seen. hach
of the maids had parasols of the
same delicate material, constituting a
most beautiful picture. In the fol
lowing car, which was decorated
with a profusion of Oregon grape,
with red poppies, rode the children's
queen. Utile May Dezendorf. The
Hose school children, with over 300
in line, were next. The first contin
gent, numbering about 1 M . carried
an imitation of Japanese cherry blos
soms. It waH a beautiful array and
blended with the May pole figures
that followed close behind, which
were of a similar color. In the first
party were pupils under Misses Eliza
beth Farroti, Hazel Jewett, Adeline
Stewart and Gertrude Dfllard. The
next were accompanied by Mrs. F. C.
Kitzpatrick, Miss Fthel Tooze, Miss
Hildegarde Shoemaker, Miss Helen
Hamilton. Miss Katherfno Paul had
charge of a third group who carried
huge stalks of poppies. Another
group was under Miss Lowene Payne
and M Iss Eva Applegate, and were
dressed In caps of red, white and: .
blue. !j
The boys band headed the delega-1 X
lion from the Fullerton school, who , T

had about lun pupils in line. They
bore purple and white streamers and
present eo an excellent appearance.
The teachers were Miss Kathertne
Agee, Miss Ruth Swinney, and Prof.

much applause all along the line.
Nearly 5 0 little eirls were dressed
as Kel Cross nurses and fifty other
boys and girls were dressed as
Scouts and Goddesses of Liberty.
