Several men were busy at the de pot this morning in measuring off the distance for the erection of the new flag pole for the flag raising which will take place there during the first day of the carnival. The flag was received this morning. It Is eight by twelve feet and the largest in the city. Southern Pacific Agent L. B. Moore stated this morning that all arrangements for the program for the occasion will soon be made. Sev eral outside parties will be present to deliver short talks, and Supt. F. L. Hurkhalter has been invited to give an address. Hon. Dinger Hermann will also give a patriotic talk. The flag raising has been planned by the officials and employes of the South ern Pacific Company In this city and will be one of (he important events of the carnival and an appropriate opening for the three days of festivi ties. Mr. Moore said this morning that he was planning a unique feat ure In connection with the program, which he will keep as a surprise for the occasion. .. The body bad been held pending the arrival of the mother, Mrs. Ben Ilessey, of Hellar, Wis., who arrived this morning. Two or three contests will tie staged, how- The Hounlas County Agricultural Council of Defense will hold Its first meeting this evening at the city hall to make plans lor the Agricultural Dofense Day on Saturday and dis cuss other matters of Importance. The organization is the central com mittee of various other societies in the county and includes delegates from the Patriotic Hardening Club and the (.ranges of the county. Each community Is represented and the meeting will be widely attended. The question of food preparedness will be discussvd and ways and! means for currying on the ngricul-j tural work talked of. Several talks will he given nnd C. .1. Hurd will be present with several suggestions. This organization has been Just j newly formed, but it will remain in future existence and ni:ik the gar den work and co-operation ef fective. An automobile drive was also one of the delightful features arranged by the Grants Pass physicians. IRON STOIEN BY TRAN SIENT IDENTIFIED AFTER ARTICLE READ IN REVIEW After reading an Item In the Re view last evening to the effect that a transient was held at the city jail on suspicion of having stolen an electric iron which was found in his possession by Night Officer Wilcox, Mrs. Geo. Kapp, of Sheridan street, went to an up-stairs room and found that appliance of that kind us ually kept there had disappeared. She immediately railed up the offi cers and gave such an accurate de scription that there was little doubt as to the owner of the Iron. The man in jail, who gives the name of Patrick Gassen, a .Mexican, In about 4 0 years of age and admits reaching the city from the north by means of a fast freight some time Monday afternoon. When found by the officer with the iron that even ing, he stated that he had found the instrument in an alley where it had been discarded because of its lack of repairs. The story was found to be falro and Gassen was locked in jail. What action will be taken was not known today, but It was thought probable that the man will be turn ed over to the grand jury. .
