MORE MEN ARE NEEDED,
ACCORDING 10 EITIER
REACHING HERE TODAY
A letter was received In Hosebur
this mornliiK intitnattnn that the
recent order from Washington to the
effect that for the present no more
commissions will he granted In the
Officers' Keserve Corps 'until after
the training camps, is misleading,
and does not mean that the Ooveru
nieut has sufficient applications for
commissions.
IJuite to the contrary, many more
applicants nre desired. The War De
partment order simply means that
for the present. Instead of being com
missioned, these applicants who pas
the necessary examinations will he
recommended for the Keserve Otfi
cers' training camp, to bo bold for
t hreo mon His a I t he Presidio, San
Francisco, Cat., beginning May 8.
Those: admitted to the training
cHiup will bo required to pledge that
if their work Is satisfactory they
will accept whatever commission may
be offered b tho Secretary of War.
They do not pledge that they will
enlisl as privates if they are not ac
cepted after the final examinations.
Those applicants who are now
taking examinations, and other ap
plicants who have not yet been com
missioned, will be notified by the
War Department If Hieir (iiallfica
liona nre satisfactory. They will bo
expected to present themselves at
the Presidio Tor the training camp
between May 1 and May K.
1 wenly . n o hundred iUalifi. cl
young men n wanted by the War
Department to take the training at
ibe Presidio camp," said Captain
Miles. "The-only pledge required of
them is that they will accept aiiv
commission offered them by the Sec
retary of War alter they have com
pleted Hieir training."

NEW GAMES Will BE
INIRODfCED AT LOCAL
The small balls for playing duck
pins, nine pins, Jonah, cocked hat,
four buck, five back and many other
games, have arrived at the I'mpuun
Club alleys and great Interest is be-i
ing taken by a large number of de
votees of the small ball games.
Many of the older class of bowlers
are more familiar with these games
than with the present game of ten
pins, and can now indulge in this
most healthful of all indoor sports
bowling. The small ball games are
also being participated in by many of
the ladles, who find It easier to roll
the smaller halls than the regulation
bowling balls. 0
Friday night marked the opening'
or a big ragtime howling-tournament
at the club alleys. As a large num
ber of good bowlers have developed
since the opening of the alleys, a
very close and exciting race is an
ticipated. This tournament is very
similar to Hie, Northwest Interna
tional How ling Tournament being
staged in Poriland the later part of
this month. Many oT the old time
bowlers are 'coming back" and
showing Hie younger I'ellows a merry
chase for honors.
