cation will be worth to you in a gen
oral way, but what it means to you

ternoon," announced Dean John
Straub, of Ihe University of Oregon,
when he addressed the assembly of
high school students Thursday after
noon. Dean Straub believes In high
er education for tlie young people
and he brings a message of encour
agement to all of the high school
students In the state, to continue
their high school studies and enter a
college course.
This Is the first time In two years
trf-at Prof.. Straub has spoken in this
cily, but. those who remember his
talk at that time greatly enjoyed It.
The address which he gave today was
a splendid plea for education, ror its
practical as well as cultural .value.
Pror. Straub said that he admired
the young people with the spirit or
Independence and self-reliance,' hut
warned them not to become so Inde
pendent thinking that they will ig
niore the advantages of college train
ing. "This is an age of mind and not of
muscle," said Dean Straub, "and ir
young people develop their brawn
and neglect their brain, I am sorry
ror them. It is a time when efficien
cy is needed and you cannot artord
lo let anything keep you from fin
ishing your education. The boy who
goes to work immediately upon leav
ing the grade school lias an earning
capacity of only $250 per year. In
comparison with the man of college
education, whose earning powers
are increased to the average or $2,
1100 per year. A man gets his besl
wages for labor when he is young.

in the work where brains are re

Prof. Straub advised that In
choosing a life profession to find out
if some machine can do the work for
you. for If a machine can accomplish
your work it will drive you out. He
said there was no machine that did
the thinking. He thought that prep
aration is one Becret of success. "It
pays to be prepared, " he added.
"That is my lesson and what I want
to tell you. Get thorough efficiency
and preparation for your life work
and you won't need to look for Ihe
job, it will come to you. It doesn't
take several thousand dollars to get
through college if you are really in
earnest and want an education."
Before concluding his talk Dr.
Straub told of the self-support that
many of the college students were
earning and skeched the education
al life among the students at the
State University.
