With nearly 1U0 persons in at tendance, the members of the Sher iff's Keserves met at the state arm ory here last evening and perfected an organization. Included 'among those . present at the meeting were many of the most prominent busi ness and professional men of the city. The meeting was called to order by Dr. K. W. Haynes, who st tiled it was the purpose of the organization to protect the interests of the peo ple of this city in any emergency that may arise dining the present war between the United States and Cennany. in order to avoid confus ion, Dr. Haynes stated that it would be well for the secretary to secure the street addresses and telephone numbers' of all persons belonging to Hie organization. This was done, and the names, street addresses and telephone numbers of the members are In the hands of Sheriff IJuine. who is in active command of the or ganization. In the event of any emergency, Sheriff Quiue will be able to reach the members of the organization by simply calling them by telephone. Those who have no telephone will be notified by mes sengers, who will be employed by the sheriff. Following this action, the mem hers were informed that they should provide themselves with some st a n da rd f i re a rm . Th ose lmvi n n rifles were advised to secure fn rounds of am munition, while those having shut guns will be required to secure li'i rounds. Both guns and ammunition must he furnished at the expense of those who responded to the sheriff's appeal. In order not to work a hardship on the mem bers of the organization, it wits de cided not to adopt any standard make or character .of gun. Afler receiving instructions re garding their duties, the members ol lite organization accepted the oath of deputy sheriffs, which was admin istered by County Clerk K. 11. Lenox. As a result of being sworn in as deputy sheriffs the reserves are sub ject to call al any time, and have authority to make arrests when they consider such action necessary. As soon a. the Coast Artillery Company is called to the colors, the sheriff's reserves will hold frequent drills in the armory. Dr. F. W. Haynes. who served his country during the Span ish-Aiuerican war and who is con sidered one of the most efficient military men In Douglas County. will act as dilllinaster. During the meeting last evening, W. A. Williams, general agent for the Continental Fire Insurance Company, delivered a brief address in which he told of what is being done a!onur military lines in other sections of the slate. He said pat riotism is in evidence everywhere 1 hrmu'hont Oregon, and numerous military organizations are being per fected by people oT all classes. Mr. Williams said there is do doubt that l Pie f Oregon are standing somirelv behind the President in the present controversy with Cermany. C. lirown returned here last evening from Wilbur where he assisted J. A. Churchill, state superintendent of public instruction, in standardizing the schools of that place as a four year high school. Cpon making an examination of the Wilbur schools .Mr. Churchill found that they met the requirements of the state law, both In regard to teachers and equipment. In a brief address before the pupils and patrons of the Wilbur schools Mr. Churchill lauded the people of that vicinity for the interest they hud manifested in their educational institutions and said the school there was one of the most efficient in the state. After standardizing the Wilbur school Mr. Churchill and Mr. lirown went to Sutherlin. where the county superin tendent stardardlzed the grades of the schools there, llrief talks were made bv both Mr. Churchill and the session was much enjoyed by those who chanced to be present. t Tim iii:;ii,.i!
