by .Miss Illanche Kiddle, formerly
employed in the primary department
Kiddle schools, in which Dr.
Kaiser and W. T. Langlois
were alleged to be disloyal to the
'flag. This was because thoy were

the children of the schools to salute
the flag. Miss Kiddle was not elect
ed a teacher in the Kiddle schools
this year, and it is probably for this
reason that. I he unfavorable notor
iety has been given us in the several
siate newspapers. The following
statements by well known citizens
give the real facts of the occurrence.

To Vhoni it May Concern:
The story relative to the recent
trustee meeting in Kiddle is plainly
a "tempest In a teapot." All regu
lar business had been attended to and
Dr. Kaiser turned to a wounded man
who was waiting to be treated. As
we were leaving the room, ono mem
ber of the board suggested having a
flag salute in Ihe schools. Dr. Kaiser
said everybody ought to be willing
lo salute the American flag, hut ho
did not care about forcing anyone to
do it. I suggested that it be leH to
Mr. llronson and the teachers to
handle. This seemed to meet with
general approval and we left the
office amid some good natiired ban
ter between Mr. Gardner and Dr.
Kaiser. Mr. I.auglols took practi
cally no part in the conversation.

I'lans for the proposed military
highway along the coast from the
Canadian border on the north to the
Mexican border on the south are sug
gested in a letter received by the
Koseburg Commercial Club from It
W. Kmerson, secretary of the Pacific
Coast Defense League, with head-
(Itiarters at Seattle.
The letter says:
"The Pacific Coast Defense
League Is endeavoring to have Con
gress take action favorable to the
construction of a military highway
on this coast, from the Canadian to
the Mexican border. Considerable
has been accomplished so far, and
we feel that much more can be ac
complished by a greater activity on
the entire coast. We are confident
of this from a suggestion made by
Senator Miles Poindexler.
"We are asking the Government
to construct this road first, because
it is a matter of defense in which the
entire nation is interested, and sec
ond, because the government lias In
forest reserves In our three coast
states sufficient wealth to construct
ten such systems ol' highways as we
are asking. Briefly, the favored
route of this road is from Hlaine,
Wash., following the Pacific High
way through this state and through
Oregon to a point at or near Drain
in that slate, where a low pass has
been found through the mountains to
Coos Hay, thence south along the
coast to Kureka, Cal., or I might say
to San Francisco bay, thence along
some selected route to the Mexican
border. Side roads will be asked
connecting this road with strategic
points on the coast.
"We are endeavoring to have con
gress appropriate the money for the
survey and preliminary work on this
road. In connection with the army
appropriation bill which failed of
passage at the last session and will
come up early at the extra session of
Congress. The legislatures of the
coast states have memoralized Con
gress in favor of the project.
"We are asking the co-operation
of all organizations on the coast
which have the interest of this sec
tion al heart. The Chamber of Com-
Inerce of Portland has a military
road committee which has made a
valuable report. We are receiving
encouragement from every section or
the coast and believe with the prop
er co-operanon our plan can be suc
cesslully carried out."
