LONDON, Api'il 12. The greatest battle of the war is com
ing soon. Germany is gathering her resources, preparing to put
her full forces on the western front, according to General Mau
rice, director of military operations, in an interview today.
Stumbling over slippery hummocks, sticky mudholes and moving
in the most wintery weather in 50 years, the British rammed their
line further against the Germans. The P.ritish thrust forward
two formidable wedges at Jloniehyle and Bullscourt, bringing
enormous pressure against the sides of the wedges, attempting to
force the Germans from the intervening-ground. Against these
wedges the Germans made constant counter attacks. The British
artillery is continuing its awful steady pounding. General Haig's
men are literally-blasting their way forward.
I'aris reports new activity, indicating that the French are
preparing for a great spring drive.
BUILD MANY WOODKN VESSELS.

WASHINGTON, April 12. Flans are made for the building
of 3000 wooden vessels of .'1000 tons each, to be completed within
the next three years. Theplan.s have been approved by President
Wilson, the boats to be used in transporting food and supplies to
the allies. The Government shipping board has called upon "(),
000 lumbermen and woodworkers to begin work immediately.
Each ship will be manned by a trained gun crew, and also equip
ped with anti-submarine wireless. Commencing November 1st,
three ships daily will be put into service. Seventy per cent of the
ships will be built upon the Pacific Coast, and the vessels taken
through the Panama canal, loiided with lumber
EXPLOSION KILLS ONE MAN.
PHILADELPHIA, April 12. One person was killed and one
injured in an explosion in Erankfort arsenal. The explosion was
"purely accidental," according to Major Pelot, arsenal oilicer.
Conclusive evidence was found, he said, showing the careless re
moval of a timer from a shell fuse, which caused the accident
PEACE OVEIiTCIIES ARE SCENTED.
COPENHAGEN, April 12. There are apparently positive
reports that the German foreign ollice is making pence overtures
to the United States. Further details are unattainable, but it is
understood that Secretary of State Lansing has already received
overtures. It is reported that Colonel House, personal friend of
the President, may bo sent to The Hague for an "unollicial con
ference." ANTI-GEILMAN OUTBREAKS REPORTED.
RIO 1)E JANEIRO, April 12. Serious anti-German out
breaks at San Paulo marked the public insistence for war with
Germany. An Austrian break is expected todav.
SEPARATE PEACE ASKED?
LONDON, April 12. An Exchange Telegraph dispatch as
serted that Bulgarian delegates are in Switzerland seeking separ
ate peace with representatives of the entente allies.
RECRUITING OF MEN CONTINUES.
WASHINGTON, April 12. The recruiting of the National
Guard to 100 in each company continues, and this will probably
later be increased to lf0, so the War Department announced.
BULGARIA BREAKS RELATIONS.
WASHINGTON, April 12 It is reported that Bulgaria has
broken relations with the United States. The action is a surprise
here in ollicial and diplomatic circles. The State Department de
nied knowledge of the rupture, and the Bulgarian legation states
that no news has reached them from home for some time.
EXPLOSION WAS ACCIDENTAL.
PHILADELPHIA, April 12. "There is no evidence of a
pint," according to an ollicial statement by Charles Post, state fire
marshal, after making a careful survey of the Eildystone muni
tions disaster. An accidental llare-up ot black powder m the
"shaking chamber" cause the explosion, according to Post. De
spite Post's statement, Federal agents are working today on plot
clews. Nearly (10 unidentified dead are still in the morgue, and
w ill be buried todav.
PLOT TO DYNAMITE DAM FRUSTRATED.
EL PASO. April 12. An attempt to dynamite the Elephant
Butte dam, a million dollar project, was frustrated. It is reported
that troops arrested a number of Germans and Auslnans.
AUSTRIA PRESSING FOR PEACE.
ROME. April 12. Austria is pressing the Pope to move for
peace, according to a report from authentic Vatican circles. Cor
riere Dalla Sera declared that the Pope was refusing to proceed
"for diplomatic reasons."
PEACE OVERTURES NOT WANTED.
WASHINGTON, April 12 The State Department denied
knowledge of any peace overtures, and had no reason to believe
that any were enroute. It was added that the Government is not
ready for any peace overtures, and left the inference that the ad
ministration is against separate peace.
TO HOLD MEETINGS WITH ALLIES.
WASHINGTON, April 12. Separate meetings with tin
French and British war commissions will be held by the American
Government head soon, it was oiliciallv announced.
"ROOSEVELT VOLUNTEERS" TO ORGANIZE.
WASHINGTON. April 12. Representative Emerson, of
Ohio, will introduce a bill asking the President to authorize the
organization of the "Roosevelt volunteers" of loo.ono men. The
army to be subject to the War Department and under the Presi
dent orders.
FIGHT OVER ARMY BILL ANTICIPATED.
WASHINGTON, April 12. Threats of a serious tight over
the general army bill grew in Congress. Majority Leader Kitchin
