Local committees on preparing for the Douglas County Odd Fellows celebration, to be held in Hoseburg on April 28, met on Thursday even ing to begin arrangements therefor. They organized by choosing L. Wim berly chairman, and Carl V. un man secretary. A program lor this celebration was ontlined about as follows: At 10:30 a. in. will begin the regu lar Anniversary Celebration program of addresses, music and special feat ures. llig basket dinner at noon. In the afternoon there will be de gree work by the Itebekahs at 2 o'clock and by the subordinate lodges at 4 o'clock. In the evening there will be a fine musical program by the Odd Kellows' orchestra, including several special features of interest. This is one ol the finest musical organizations In his part of the state. A number of committees were ap pointed to look after the various ar rangements. Among these is a com mittee on decorations, who will make an attractive display on behalf of. the order. The business houses will also be requested to make ap propriate window displays or other suitable decorations. The local lodges will serve hot cof fee and otherwise assist in entertain ing the visitors at the basket dinner. If the weather is tine the forenoon program and dinner will probably be held at the Hellows Park and Play ground In West Hoseburg. Crand Master II. S. Westbrook, of Port land, has been invited to speak on this occasion, but lias not yet sent a reply. Other excellent speakers will also be heard. It Is expected that at least 1000 Odd Fellows and Itebekahs will assemble here on that day. A spe cial train will he run from points south, while those from the north can utilize the regular trains. The committees in charge expect to make this the biggest event of Its kind ever held in this county. Every member of Ihe order is invited to participate and every lodge in the county is asked to co-operalo on this occasion. "I have traveled quite extensively throughout Oregon during t lie past few years," said Mr. Westerluml, "and I . can truthfully say that Hosehurg is one of the hest appear ing towns- in the state. Your town Is well paved and t ho dwellings in dicate that your people are content ed. I visited a nuniher of the stores here and found them to lie well stocked with season aide merchan dise. I also want to say that the municipal Improvements in evident e here are far ahead of many of the larger and more important towns of the state." Mr. Westerlund resides at Med ford, where he owns the Holland Hotel. He is also interested in much other property in that vicinity. Terrible as seems a case of drunkeuness now days, when au intoxicated individual is haled before the officers of the state, a few years ago the situation in ltoseburg was much different. An incident illustrative of this fact was mentioned Thursday by Jos eph Micelli, of the First State mil Savings Hank. "1 was serving as mayor of the city." said .Mr. Micelli, 'when one day a drunken young man had lo be arrested In order to keep the peace. The marshal placed him in the city jail and a few hours later went to see how ho was get ting along. Instead of becom ing sober, be was still as drunk as ever, however,, so he was left for another period of several hours. The next time he was seen, he was even drunker than before. . A con sultation was then held and it was decided to make an in vestigation. Several of the of ficials entered the jail, and there in one corner was 111 bottles. still unopened, of sparkling Cyrus Noble." MEETING WAS ENJOYED BY LOCAL FORESTER; BANQUET WAS FEATURE That ihe recent meeting of the foresters held in lurt land was hy far the best meeting of its kind ever held on the Pacific Coast, was the statement of S. The business sessions arranged b the Portland committee, consumed six days, according to Mr. Partruni. and reached a conclusion following a banquet held at tne Multnomah Hotel last Saturday night. The ban iuet was a very elaborate affair and was attended by forest supervisors and rangers from all sections ol Oregon. Washington and Alaska. II was during this banquet that. Mr. Hart rum pulled off the joke wh ich was chronicled in a recent issue ot the- Review. Last Sunday the foresters, to gether with their families, enjoyed ,in automobile trip over the Colum bia Highway. They also visited the hatchery at itnnneville, as well as other places of interest in that sec lion of the state. We do not seem to notice the rise in this staple product, us many of our Cow Creek farmers have plenty on hand to sell, and evcrj body is going to raise potatoes this season. The Darby building, on Pacific avenue, is being refitted and thor oughly renovated, ready for occu pancy. The Hobhs building is nearing completion. James A. Dewey will move his business there in the near f u t u re. The C.lendale Telephone Co., own ed and operated by I. 11. Smith, is rendering to its patrons its usual ex cellent service. ltoad improvement is now the or der of the day. Our enterprising citizens have caught the spirit and our good roads aro to be made bet ter. We note the commencement of making roads, began by James Thomas, at Anchor, is still going on. Oregon will yet measure up with California along the good roads line. Uev. J. P. Kenny, who has been ill at his home in this city for some weeks, is si ill unable to be out, al though he is improving slowly. Ihe annual meeting of Olivet Presbyterian Church will be held on Tuesday evening, the llrd inst. A gen eral attendance of all members and adherents of the church is especially requested, as there is business of im portance to be transacted.
