nounced that this road will he the very first lor which tiie Mate
Highway Commission will ask an apportionment from tiie Fed
eral appropriation under the Sh;;ekleford law. That the sum ol
.SJO.OIMi, matched by .:;o,(HID of state road funds, would be applied
on this road. This w ill he in addition to equal or larger sums pro
vided by Uouirlas and Coos comities. The proposed Douglas Coun
ty bonding plan provides .-s.'iO.OOO for this road and Coos will prob
ably supply a like sum.
The State Highway Commission is already on record as being
w illing to match Douglas County, dollar for dollar, for improving
the road through Pass Creek Canyon and over Roberts hill. They
will be able to do likewise on ot ier parts of the main highway,
provided the state road bonding issue is carried on June I. This
is in addition to the paving that must be done from the bonding
fund.
Mr. Adams also openly refu'ed the claims that the proposed
state highway system, as mapped out under the bonding act, will
cost $00,(11111,1100' or more, lie (h i I; red that the paving alone will
cost not to exceed . 10,000 p.-r mile. He also announced the belief
that the bonding fund w ill pave a proximately o"i0 miles of the
main state highways. Mr. Adams was emphatic in hl declaration
that roads of the greatest utility n id importance will be gien at
tention first, and that the so-called scenic roads, if any, would I.e
altogether an alter consideration.
During his address Mr. Allans read a carel't'llv tabulated
statement showing that the automobile license fees will more than
pay all the proposed state bonding : finds and interest, during the
amortization period of ." years, ai d w ill also accumulate a sur
plus of over !?7,000,000 besides, which will go into the state road
fund, l'litting the matter into other words, he said the automo
bile owners were only asking the state to loan its credit lor tut
amount of these bonds and allow them to pay off the entire
amount and a hu g.' surplus besides for building good roads. Tin y
can well afford to tin this, said Mr. Adams, on account of the
great saving they will enjoy by less wear on tires and machines
and smaller amount of gasoline neided. These bonds will there
fore not cost a singl.' dollar of the n gular tax money of the county
or state. These paved roads w ill be open and free to everybody,
but the automobile owners will pay for them. In fact they will
be glad to do so under the plan provided, in order to get such hard
surfaced roads just as soon as they can be built.
