house. Mr. W'ygant has visited in
Koseburg on several occasions and
it nilte well known here. He Is an
advocate of good roads and believes

adopted by the people of Oregon at
the Hpeclal election to be held on
June 4.

Ira Pllklngton and wife, who left
here about three years ago, are now
located at Itochester, Nevada, ac
cording to a letter received from Mr.
Pllklngton this morning. I'pon
leaving Koseburg. Mr. and Mrs.
Pilkington went to Kastern Oregou
and later to points In Idaho. They
appear to be pleased with their pres
ent location and will probably make
Nevada their permanent home.
Child Decorates Window
One of the few window displays in
the city made In honor of the good
roads day here yesterday was that
at the hardware store of S. It.
Crouch, on Sheridan st reel. The
window featured auto tires, which
were set off by a cleverly devised
roadway In imitation of the Pacific
Highway. Toy automobiles were at
work hauling materials, while others
were enjoying the speedway where it
had been improved. The display was
the work of Victor Ciomh, 11-year-old
son of the proprietor.

Sybil Cornult, the six year old
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Cor
nult, of Itiddle, who was brought
to Mercy Hospital, is slightly im
proved today. Mr. Cornutt returned
to Kiddle today, but Mrs. Cornut 1
remained in the city.
Joined A vial ion Corps
Lee Leonard, of Oakland, Wed
nesday enlisted in the aviation corps
of the United States Army. The
young man returned IIiIh afternoon
to his home at Oakland, but expects
to leave Friday for Vancouver, where
tie will take the examination. If suc
cessful tie will be stationed ai San
Diego.

Iierailinent Holds Trains
A car derailment which occurred
about one mile south of Springfield
Junction on freight train No. L'MIT,
soitt libound. at U o'clock last night .
caused delays of several hours to fol
lowing trains during the night and
(his morning. According to the re
port of Conductor H. C. Cook, the
train left the Junction in good order
but a short time later a pair of
trucks slid from the rails and pulled
otf one of the cars. The only daiu
ige was tin breaking of some of the
brake apparatus and the tearing up
f about tinu ties. The engineer was
K. Winier. Train No. 1 :i was five
hours late and did not arrive here

Hose Hai Arrived
The supply of hOHU for the local
j fire department, consisting of 1.000
' feet, which wai recently ordered by
I 1 lie fire commission, arrived tbis
I morning. Jt will be divided into

I state fire underwriter in a report
made several months ago. The sta
tions are near the Ijysinger mill on

plants in North Koseburg.

at Kugene this morning. He said he
w as much pleased with the meeting
and hopes to return here at a later

the people of this locality. Mr.
Adams is a fluent and interest inji
talker and his address at the roads
meeting was mm-h enjoyed.
Kunenil Held Today
The funeral oi the late Samuel
Swiekard. who died suddenly here
last Monday, was held at the chapel
of the Koseburg I'ndertakmg Par
lors at ' o'clock this afternoon.
Kev. ". II. Katon. pastor of the lo
cal Baptist Church, delivered the fu
neral sermon. Interment of the body
followed in the Odd Fellows ceme
tery. Mr. Swiekard was quite well
known here and the funeral was at
tended by many friends.
MAPLE TREES PUNTED
ON STEPHENS STREET;
CITY UNDERTAKES WORK
LOCAL AND PERSONAL.
Acting in accordance with an or
der from the city council last Mon
day night. Street Sunt. A. M. Oelahd
this morning began the setting out
of over 2UU young maple trees on
South Stephens street. The trees are
Jin good condition and it is believed
through the attention to be given by
the city employes they will reach
maturity without difficulty.
The trees were placed in the park
ings at a distance of about 2' feet
apart, beginning on the block south
of Cass street. For four or five
blocks the trees will continue to line
the pavement, making eventually a
beautifully shaded thoroughfare,
should tiie plant ing meet with suc
cess. The work is being done by the
employes of the city, the property
owners merely giv ing their consent.
In addition to the present lot of
trees, which has been on hand for
some time, it is said there are about
-Olio seedling trees which will be
ready for planting some time later.
These will be placed on other streets
as soon as they have properly developed.
