turned a verdict of not guilty in the
case of the State vs. V. L .Mathison,
real estate dealer of Oakland, Cal.,
who was arre.-ded several months
ago on a charge of having given IL
II. I'jerce. of Kugene. a worthless
abstract of title to Texas lands. The
defense permitted the case to go to
the jury without placing any wit
nesses on tho stand.

here, was emitted to only five per
cent of the total cost of the struct

board voted to allow Mr. White tho

present date until the time the
building is completed and in readi
ness to turn over to the school dis
trict. H. L. Stephens, a member of the
school board, argued that Mr. White
should not be paid more than $25,
which would cover the expenses of
his trip from Portland to Uoseburg
and allow him a few dollars for his
labors. When the proposition of al
lowing Mr. White $f0 was submitted
to the consideration of the board Mr.
Stephens voted in the negative. The
other members of I lie board voted fd
allow him that amount.

Uoseburg Merchant' Association to
be held at the offices of E. C. Iten
Hon this evening, reports will be re
ceived from three committees ap
pointed at a previous session of the
organization.
One of the committes to report at
tonight's meeting of the merchants
was appointed 'to investigate the ad
vlsabilily of establishing a cannery
in this city. Another committee was
assigned to investigate and deter
mine what is to be gained by Doug
las County as a result of the adop
tion of the $6,000,000 road bond Is
sue at the lAst session of the Legis
lature. This bill will not become a
law until ratified by the voters at a
special election to he held on June '
4. The third committee appointed
by the merchants has been investi
gating the proposition of furnishing
the rest room in the new armory.
Mr. Honson staled this afternoon
lhat he believed all three of the
committees would be in a position to
submit reports at tonight's meeting
of the merchants. What action will
be taken by the members of the or
ganization in the' matters at Issue
will probably depend upon the rec
ominendal ions of the committees.

A. C. Marsters, a member of the
State Kair Hoard, will leave for Sa
lem Kriday evening, where he will
attend a meeting of that body to be
held on Saturday.
Mr. Marsters says exhibitors are
demanding a premium list, totaling
$liS.uini. a considerable increase
over the last fair. Toward the prem
ium list the Legislature appropri
ates annually a little over $17.uit0,
and the balance must be derived by
the fair board from other sources.
A great demand1 also exists for a
horse show. The horse show at the
last fair was a deeided success, al
though held in a tent. The board
asked for an appropriation for a pa
vilion, but the Legislature deolined
to grant it. In view of the cost nn1
danger eonnoeted with showing un
der a tent. Secretary Lea is inclined
to oppose holding another show un
der sueh conditions.

supply- for the fair, is being put to
use, and workmen are now engaged
in dinging ditches to connect the

lieved that these conditions will lie
entirely obviated during the coming
fair.
