POSTMASTERS FINDS SHORT
Mr. Kidder Formerly Lived in Rose.

Stanley Kidder, a former resident
of Roseburg but at the present time
employed in the Government service
in Toxus, narrowly escaped being
made the victim of a hanging bee
in 0110 of the frontier towns of the
latter state recently, according to a
letter received here Monday by Mr.
Kidder. Mrs. Kidder is at present
making her home with her sister,
on Kast avenue.
According to the letter received
by Mrs. Kidder, her husband was a
few days ago assigned to go to
Cason. a Texas town of about 20U
population, and examine the records i
of the postmaster who had failed
to report to the Postofficc Depart
ment since last August. Upon reach
ing Cason Mr. Kidder went direct
to the postotTice, where he present
ed his credentials and asked ad
mission. Apparently aware of his
shortage of funds, the postmaster
asked Mr. Kidder to remain outside
the office until he could make up an
outgoing mail. Words were ex
changed between Mr. Kidder and
the, postmaster, and finally the lat
ter was brushed aside and the post
oifice examiner entered.
Mr. Kidder then asked the post
master to turn over his cash, where
upon the latter said a part of his
funds were at his home and it j
would bo necessary for his to con-j
suit' his wife. The postmaster theni
left his office and went to his home. I
followed by Mr. Kidder, lie spent i
two or three minutes talking with i
liis wife, when he emerged through j
a rear door and started down a back j
street In the direction of the posl
office. Enroute to the postofficc the
fellow dodged into the rear of a I
general store, where he purchased
a quantity of poison. He then went
direct to the postoffice, where he in
formed Mr. Kidder that he had for-j
gotten to bring along the funds;
which he said were at his home. Ac-!
comnanied by Mr. Kidder, the fellow-
then returned to his home under
the pretense of securing the money,
llo invited Mr. Kidder into . his
home, but the latter said he prefer
red to remain on the front porch.
The postmaster had been In his
dwelling but a couple of minutes,
when Mr. Kidder heard a report
similar to a fnlling trunk top. An
instant later the -postmaster's wife
came running to t he door and ex
claimed that her husband had been
killed.

It fell on (lie porch a few inches be
hind where Mr. Kidder was stand
ing. Subsequent investigation
showed that the post master had de
lllieralelv committed suicide by
shooting' himself through the head.
Death was probably instantaneous.
Mr. Kidder remained in Cason for
a few days and found that Hie dead
post master was several hundred
dollars short in his accounts.
