Addresses were delivered by sev
eral of the committeemen, and in
eacli instance they expressed them
selves as satisfied that the people
wanted good roads and would will
ingly stand the expense in Ihe event
; the court would do its duty. It was
j argued that under the present sys
! tern the road supervisors are sup
posed to look ufter the highways,
i but that they fall far short of meet
ing the approval of the taxpayers.
Many of the. supervisors are faithful
and painstaking workmen, said one
speaker, but they have other dtilies
which require their intention at the
(lino lltey should he nt work on the
roads. Hecattse of this condition the
roads are neglected and are almost
impassible during certain seasons of
the year.

can be watched more carefully than
at the present tlino, and it will be
but a short time until Douglas Coun
ly will have highways second to no
district In this section of the slate.
There aro a number of places in
Douglas County where the drainage
Is very poor, said ono speaker, and
because of this fact special allenllon

off the roads. There is nothing thai
will ruin a highway, regardless of
Ihe ''character of Its construction,

Hie minor defects as they occur,

plaint on the part of Ihe people who

this county.
The members of the court ex-'
plained that the new road law, which
becomes elTeclive in May, HH7, pro
vides for the abolishment of Ihe road
supervisors on January 1, ISIS, and
Hint therealler the County Court
shall provide the method whereby
(he roads are to be handled. It was
claimed by the members of the court
that the employment of road mas
ters, deputies, pairoimen and other
workmen on the roads was optional
with llieiu, and they could proceed
and care for the roads as they
thought best.
As soon as the new law goes into
effect Hie members of the court said
they would give the request of the
merchants and Hrangers considera
tion, and If possible, employ patrol
men. The men employed to patrol
Hie roads would act In the same ca
pacity as the present road supervis
ors, Willi the exception that they
would be accountable to the County
Court.
1'ractlcally all of those who talked
before the County Court this after
noon expressed their approval of the
abolishment of Hie road supervisor
sysieni, in the event they are suc
ceeded by patrolmen. The money to
pay Hie proposed patrolmen will be
paid out or Hie general road funds of
the county and will not be deducted
from the district funds, as generally
supposed.
While It might be said that no
definite action was taken at the con
ference held this afternoon
initteemeu were led to believe by the
court that their request would have
due consideration at the proper time.

Albright, who spent the past two
months experting the county books,
late this afternoon filed their report
with the County Court.
The report on the sheriff's office
showed an excess of $187.31. In a
verbal explanation, the experts said
this was probably caused by the is
suance of duplicate tax receipts for
the same piece of property when
payments had not as yet been re
funded by the taxpayer. They said
their believed this apparent excess of
funds would probably be called for
by the taxpayers who had paid twico,
probably once through an agent un
known to them.
The books of the county treasurer
showed a shortage of $5.ilG. The bal
ance In certain funds did not agree
with the balance found hy the ex
perts, but the net result was a small
portage of $5.0(i. A balance sheet
for the county treasurer's office was
submitted to the court which the ex
perts asked that the treasurer use by
inserting the sheet In his cash book
and that these balances be used.
An accumulation of old balances
due on refunds was found In an old
ledger the total of which was ?8,
GS0.37, and these will probably now
be made an asset of the county by an
order of tho court, as they have re
mained for a long time without being
called for.
The books of County Clerk Lenox
showed an excess of 12.58, being a
difference on two small errors. The
experts asked that the clerk keep n
general cash book lo aid in tracing
out Hie various accounts.
Some difficulty was found with
the accounts of supervisors' reports
with the road fund, one In particu
lar being of such Intricate errors and
unexplainable items that it was im
possible to report the actual condi
tion. The court will take up the re
port at once and action taken on the
questions submitted.

The members of the county court
at 4 o'cloek this afternoon opened
the bids for the const ruct iou of a
new road around the so-called
Myrtle Creek hill.-situated on the
Pacific Highway a short distance
north of the town of Myrtle Creek.
The new road will he about !70n
feet in length and will eliminate the
present Myrtle Creek hill.
Three bids were received, as fol

A meeting has been called here
for Friday evening, at which time
all the farmers and business men
of Douglas County are urged to be
present. The meeting will be held
in the council chamber at,, the city
hall and will begin promptly at 8
o'clock. (
The purpose of this meeting it
to talk over the' needs of this coun
ty in the way of road matters; to
talk over and find out just what
the county wants- in the way of as
sistance of taking care and build
ing roads, and to arrange to have a
large delegation go before the Good
Roads Meeting at Eugene Saturday.
The State Road Commission will
be present to listen to the needs of
the different sections of the state
nnd it is very necessnry that Doug
las County be represented with a
large delegation.
There will he an afternoon and
an evening meeting, and It will he
necessary for as many as possible
to arrange to leave on the Saturday
morning train to attend the after
noon meeting which will he held at
2:30
Anyone who cannot leave in Hie
forenoon by taking the 2 o'clock
train will enuhle one to attend the
evening meeting.
