At all BEGIN SOON, ACCORDING 10 FRUIT INSPECTOR The time is now close at hand when it is necessary that the dor mant or ' clean up" spray of lime sulphur, winter strength, be applied to all fruit and ornamental trees known to be infested with scale, moss or pear leaf blister mite. Much better efficiency results from defer ring this application until the fruit and leaf buds are breaking or separ ating, as the greatest percentage of San Jose scale are more eilectively covered with this contaet spray as they are then migrating from their scale-like covering or winter armor. Some added benefit also has been demonstrated from spraying at this time in controlling apple and per scab. However, in the larger or chards it is often necessary to com mence spraying as soon as the buds begin to swell in order to finish this work in due time. The dilution of the stock solution of lime sulphur for this spraying de pends upon the strength of this con centrated stock solution. If the stock sol u tion t est s H U degrees I ta u m e, use one gallon or one part of the spray mixture to every ten gallons or ten parts of water, while with 32 degrees test liaume use one part to eight parts of water. For aphis con trol. Nicotine Sulfate 4 per cent, or Hlack Leaf "4 0" should he added at the rate of 1 to 1 2 u 0 parts or 1 pint to 1 50 gallons. The trees should be sprayed thor oughly from the outer tips of the twigs down the limbs to the trunk, using with the power outfit, at least 17f pounds pressure. In this con nection, it is advisable to use the large eddy-chamber type of nozzles such as the Friend or liean Mist, which throws a fine, mist like, but at, the same time driving, spray. The Bordeaux nozzle is fairly satisfactory tor this work If adjusted so as to de liver about a gallon and a quarter to a gallon and a half a minute at this pressure. Otherwise much spray ma terial is wasted with this nozzle. If the nozzles are set at an angle of about 4 "i degrees to t he extension rods, more efficient work can be done, and it will lighten the work of the operator. KKEI) L. CARLOAD Of OLD PAPER SHIPPED TO CALIFORNIA TODAY BY LOCAL LADIES A carload of papers and maga zines, accumulated stores of old reading matter which are menaces to dwellings as well as now things of high value, were shipped today by the local Aid Society of the Chris tian Church to be made back Into paper by the California Board and Paper Company, of Antioch, Cal. By the shipment the women will realize $Ji;i.2f, which will be a great help in carrying on their work. The plan of raising money by sell ing paper occurred to various mem bers over a month ago, when they noticed a similar action taken by the women of other cities. Canvassing was therefore started and thirteen and a half tons now compose the first shipment which left today. The paper companies are very anxious to secure the material on account of the high price being paid for the new product, and considerable saving is possible with the use of old material The shipment brought $ir.f.o per Ion. Most of the houses in the pcnlral part of the city have been visited in the past month ami wherever old paper was available it has been promptly bundled by children of the ladies Interested. 1 Is probable that other shipments will be made. Much old material is known to be in exist ence and many store rooms may be cleaned in this way while affording the local organization a handsome return .
