.Since a year ao the output of
broccoli in Doueias County for ship

kets has increased from 5'.1 to l1)'.'
cars, says the Portland Telegram.
Within the next couple of years
shipments from Kosebiire are ex
pected to reaen from ''" to t""
cars, under ref rieerat ion. Oregon
broccoli is rated in the Kastern mar
kets as the highest grade of winter
cauliflower.
This is the iiies.-afe of cheer for
.Southern Ureeon brought to Port
land by M. K. Whitehead, peneral
a sent of the Pacific Eruit Express,
op'-ratiL.s the iced, ventilated and in-.-iilat'd
car service of the .Southern
Pacific and t'nion Paeiric systems.
Mr. Whitehead has been away at
tendine the convention of the West
ern Eruit Jobbers' Assn., at San
Antonio. Texas. With .Mrs. White
bead he extended his trip to the At
lantic seaboard.
' This season's shipment of Oregon
broccoli will move to Kastern mar
kets about March 1." said Mr. White
head. " Six to seven heads of 'win

crate will net the I'mpqua Valley

A number of letters, which are
among the most interesting histori
cal documents discovered in this city
for many years, were revealed at the
iocal I". S. land office today, where
preparations are now being made for
the removal of their quarters to the
new Federal building.
Although it will be several months
before the new building is in readi
ness to receive the various Govern
ment offices here, old files have been
ransacked at the land office and the
records of over 6o years have been
put in order so that systematic ar
rangement may be installed with the
chance in location. Among these in
teresting documents are the records
of the establishment of the fir?t land
office here, which was located at
Winchester, and that authorizing the
removal later from Winchester to
Koseburg. Tney w ere written in tiie
excellent handwriting of the Govern
ment officials of that lime and are
still as easily read as on the day
they were received.
One letter dated October 11, 155,
denoted that instructions for open
ing the offices at Winchester would
be forwarded as soon as they were
prepared. On March 13. l5fi. the
instructions were sent, and the let
ter of that date states that live boxes
had been sent containing the tract
and record books and that sales
would be recorded as soon as made.
The commissioner was Thomas Aid
rich, in the administration of Presi
dent Hm hanan. and L. T. Mostir
was io-al register. The latter was a
well know n resident here, and
Mosher street was named in his
honor.
Another letter. Gated September
16. 151. was discovered, which con
tained the order for transferring the
office from Winchester to Koseburg.
These documents are being given1
considerable attention and will be .
careiuny preserved by tne present j r.
uu iciais.
