ON THURSDAY An accident which came near re sulting in a fatality occurred at the local plant of the Koseburj: Ice v fold Storage Co. late Thursday af ternoon. It appears that K. Katich, a well known mploye of the estab lishment, was defending on the i heavy laden elevator when the cable parted. Pliable to apply the brakes, .the lift plunged downward at terrific : spi'ed and struck the foundation with a thud that could be heard in all parts of the plant. As the elevator struck the floor 61" the basement the counter-weights nave way and plunged downward. These weight are very b' .tv. and one of them nar rowly mifsed Mr. Kauch. who was thrown to the tlnor its a result of the unexpected accident. CITY JAIL INFESTED WITH DISEASE GERMS, SAYS LONE OCCUPANT Claiming that the interior of the city jail is infested with germs, is unsanitary, and is an unfit place in which to house a human beng, IL L. taggs this afternoon asked Dr. Ii. H. Shoemaker, city health of ficer, to visit the institution and make a com plete inspection. Dr. Shoemaker will probably visit the jail early tomorrow, and if the Jail is as filthy as reported, it will be closed pending a thorough renova tion. M r. Stag us was this morning fined $"u in the recorder's court for selling short measure wood, and chose t he altecnat i ve of spending 1 2 days in jail. It. is the prisoner's opinion that the jail has not been cleaned out for several years and he expects the healt h authorities to act at once. This opinion is shared by other persons who havp been confined in the jail during the past few months. Although the jail should not he made any too att ra't i ve. it. is the behef of a majority of the citizens that it should at least be sanitary and free from disease.
