Clarence Lenox, sun of Dave
Lenox, arrived here last night from
Klamath Falls to visit with friends
and relatives. He formerly Uveu In
Uoseburg, where he has many
friends. He says his father, Dave
Lenox, is still engaged In business
at Klamath Kails and is well
pleased with his location there,

Dr. Cieo. l. llouck, who spent yes
terday In Iiosehurg visiting with his
wife and son. left late last uight
for Portland, where he will pass th
next three or four days. While
there. Dr. Hauck will be mustered
out of the military service. It is
Dr. llouck's present intention to re
turn to Hoseburg early next week
and resume his practice.
Setting (Hit Trees
Dr. 10. V. 1 louver, who owns an
attractive ranch a few miles south
of RoKehurg. yesterday began the
task of seting out about D)0 prune
trees. He already has one of the
niobt productive prune orchards In
this part of the county and last year
netted nearly $20ur from his pro
duct. J-Vi-giisoii Is llet'e
K. Z. Ferguson, of Portland, ar
rived here recently to inspect his
holdings in this vicinity. .Mr. Fer
guson owns a large and attractive
ranch In the Garden Valley vicinity
and expects to improve the same
during the coming summer. He will
remodel the dwelling on the prop
erty, as well as set out several hun
dred more prune trees. Mr. Fergu
son is at present registered at the
l.'mpqua hotel.
Abolish Minimum Sentences
The bill providing for the abolish
ment of minimum sentences for all
persons convicted of felonies has
passed the House, according to word
received in Uoseburg this morning,
in the event the measure is adopted
by the Senate, the present Indeterm
inate law will be eliminated from
the statute books of the state and
prisoners will hereafter he sentenced
to definite terms.
Women 'an't Serve
The bill introduced fn the Legis
lature recently providing that wo
men should be subject to Jury ser
vice failed to pass the House, ac
cording to word reaching Uoseburg
last night. The hill was found to
be unsatisfactory, and was defeated,
by the almost unanimous vote of
the members of the lower House,
Luther Hamilton Out
Word was received in Rosehnrg
this morning to the effect that Gov
ernor Withyeombe yesterday ap
pointed Dr. Frank Wood, ot Port
land, a member of the state board of
health to succeed Dr. Luther Hamil
ton, of Portland. Dr, Luther Hamil
ton formerly lived in Hoseburg and
is a brother of Dr. W. H. Hamilton,
of this city.
Fred Fndleott Known
I'red Kndicott, who was returned
to Salem recently from Spokane,
Iv'ash.. to answer a charge of wife
desertion, is well known to many
people of this city. Prior to leav
ing he re a f e v yea rs a go 1 i e. re
sided in North Koselmrg. His- father
was engaged in the contracting busi
ness business in this vicinity. Mrs.
Kndicott is a daughter of Joseph
Huffman, former city marshal of
Uoseburg, and is well known in this
locality.

the parties of which reside In Kan
sas, was taken from two members
of the family in the offices of At
torney ,1. A. Huchanan here today.
The case Is said to Involve the di

to the bill presented to the State
Legislature recently by the Slate

examined a few days ago it was dis
covered that it contained a provision
which would permit, with the con
sent of the commission, tho sale of
any game bird, animal or Si-b, and
throw down the bars to the ruthless
daughter of game by pot hunters.
Whether any action will be taken
here to prevent the passage of the
