UNDER GUARD AT HOSPITAL
At Time Thaw Attempted Suicide He
Was Occupying Kmmi in a West
Philadelphia Apartment

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 1 1.
Harry Thaw today cut his throat and
wrists in a West Philadelphia apart
ment house. Ho was rushed 10 St.
Mary's Hospital, and was still alive
at 10 o'clock. Physicians said he
has a slight chance of recovery.
Thaw attempted suicide while five
detectives were entering his apart
ment. Lieutenant Wood found Thaw
sitting In a chair, horribly mutilated
with a razor. He was calmly watch
ing the blood spurting. The police
hastily bound his wounds. Thaw
fainted, and whispered "St. Mary's,"
as ho fell to the floor. He was much
weaker when he arrived at the hos
pital. He probably opened his veins
several minutes before the police en
tered. The detectives placed a strong
guard at his bedside, and will take
Thaw to New York if he recovers.

Jury indicted Oliver Ilrower on a
charge of conspiracy in connection
with Harry Thaw.

has ended abruptly. The committee
defeated the second Hep. Wood reso

ed the Campbell resolution providing
for a furllier leak investigation by a
select committee.
James Ii eilly, managing editor of
the Wall St reel Journal, testified
that the brokers' Washington wires
carried the original tip of Wilson's
note, lie said the Dow-Jones ticker
service announced that "a peace
manifesto would be issued." The
dispatch slreniMhened the market,
giving the brokers an opportunity to
prepare t heir accounts for a break
and thereby prevent ing a panic.

OREGON'S NEW 'BONE DRV
LAW IS NEARLY READY;
INTRODUCED TOMORROW

afternoon from Salem to the effect
ihat the so-called "bone dry" law
will probably be introduced in the
j-cgislature some time tomorrow.
The bill was practically completed
at noon today, and it is certain that
.t will not carry a search and seizure
clauses as originally anticipated.
Dr. Anderson and other "dry"
leaders on tho ground declare that it
merely will carry into effect the
wishes of the people, aa expressed by
the constitutional amendment adopt
ed last November.
The bill will carry an emergency
clause, however. That will make It
operative immediately after it
passes the two houses and Is signed
by the governor. Inasmuch as the
alcoholic traffic committee of the
two houses propose to hold joint ses
sions before placing It on third read
ing in either house, the bill is not
likely to encounter serious delays.
According to the schedule now being
mapped out for it, the measure
should get through both houses In
side of three weeks.
That will make it effective about
February 1 .
It will bo unlawful, after it be
comes effect Ive, for anyone to ship
iiiiuor into the state for beverago
purposes. No express company, rail
road, or other common carrier will
be permitted under the law to de
fiver such liquor shipments.
It is probable that the same bill
will carry with it amendments to tho
existing law, regulating the sale of
alcohol. liepresentatlve Matthieu,
who is a member of the House com
mittee on alcoholic traffic, has sent
to I'ortlnnd for copies of the ordin
ance proposed for restrictinfl alcohol
sales there. He Is a druggist, and
wants the law so arranged that alco
hol cannot be sold, except for legiti
mate purposes and for external use
only.
It Is reported at Salem that some
of the radical "dry" forces in Port
land want to attach a search and
seizure section to the bone dry meas
ure, but the more conservative ele
ment, including Hr. Anderson, Sena
tor Shanks, Senator Kddy and others,
are opposed to such stringent meas-
