LOCAL JUNK DEALER ARRESTED ON A CHARGE Of STEALING REVOLVER Following the Introduction of con-1 siderable evidence and the arguments of the attorneys. Circuit Judge J. W. Hamilton this morning rendered a decision in favor of the plaintiff in the case brought by Robert L. Allen against the Slate Land Board. The action was originally filed by Mr. Allen to quiet title to approximately SO acres of land situated In the vi cinity of Yoncalla. The evidence adduced by the sev eral witnesses showed that In the year lStlti Jesse Appiegate, one of the pioneer residents of Southern Oregon, received patent from the United States Government to SO acres of land in the vicinity of Yoncalla. A short lime later. .Mr. Appiegate berame a surety on the bond oi me state treasurer, with the result that the latter defaulted early In the 70 s. The state then brought suit against Mr. Appiegate to recover the amount of the bond and obtained a judgment against him in the mini of approxi mately $2400. An execution was is sued later on all the property owned by Mr. Appiegate. The property was then sold on execution, and In the year 1SS1 a deed was issued to the stale. Some time afterward Mr. Apple gate entered into negotiations with the state and satisfied what he. thol embraced the entire judgment. He then deeded the land involved in the suit to Mi. Sally Long, and in turn she reposed title to the property In R. S. Appiegate. At a later date the land passed from the hands of It. S. Appiegate to A. P. Appiegate, and was finally purchased by Mr. Alien. Two years ago Mr. Appiegate re ceived first knowledge that the state imd n deed to the land when he re i-pived notice that It had been offered for sale by the State Land Hoard. As soon as It became apparent that the stale Intended to sell the land, Mr. Allen brought a suit to quiet title to When Joe Greef and Nathan En frank, local junk dealers, fell out here today over some trivial matter, the former man informed Sheriff George Quine and Constable Church that Enfrank last moncu entered a second-hand store at The Dalles and stole a revolver valued at about $25. Greef also charged his companion with committing other thefts, one of which is alleged to have occurred In Portland prior to the time they left that city three months ago. The re volver described by Greef waB found in possession of the junk men and was confiscated by the constable. It is now being held by the sheriff. Sheriff Quine this afternoon called up the officers at The Dalles and told them about Greef's confession. They later replied to the effect that a war rant has been issued there for En frank's arrest and an officer would leave The Dalles for Roseburg to night. Enfrank will probably be re turned to The Dalles where he will face the charge of grand larceny flreef also claims that Enfrank stole a gold ring from hlni, but the article was not found in his possession by the officers. James Reed, aged 26, an alleged German, was arrested -today in connection with the explosion at the Fort Pitt works or the Aetna Chemical Com pany, in which three persons were killed. Good Fellows" Will Organize In common witlt its practice in previous years, The Review is now making arraiiKements to organize n "Good Fellows Club" to care i'or the children of Koseburo; who will not receive Christmas gifts unless the same are provided by members of this unique and public spirited organization. To get the plans under way as quickly as possible, The Review asks that all persons having knowledge ol' children whose Christmas will be cheerless unless they are provided for by the "Good Fellows" of this city, to send the names oi' the little ones to The Review, to gether with their age, sex and street address. The names of these children will be helfl in strict confi dence by The Review management, and only one of them will be given to each "Good Fellow." There is also an obligation for the "Good Fellows" to fulfill. The members of this organization are asked to visit The Review office before Saturday preceding Christ mas and secure the name of one of the unfortunate children. All transactions in connection with purchas ing and delivering the gifts will be confined to the donor and recipient, The Review acting only as agent in securing the names of the children and placing the same in the hands of the "Good Fellows." There fire quite a number of children in Roseburg this year who are looking ahead to a cheerless Christmas unless the "Good Fellows" get busy and come to the rescue, liy participating in this worthy cause your own Christ mas will be made much happier, and you will know that you were the means of having lightened some ach ing heart. Last year the names of every unfortunate child reported to The Review were provided with gilts by the "Good Fellows," and it is believed the demand for names this season will be equally as large. All names sent to The Review will be investigated, and only those who are worthy will be given lo the "Good Fellows."
