The Indict ment declares, "In truth and in fact, tho deed given by the defendant Mathtmm was false and fictitious' and ho did not own the laud in TexaH. Straw, former mayor of Marshfield and one of the most prominent phy sicians in southwestern Oregon, was yesterday granted a decree of di vorce In the Coos County courts. Dr. Straw is well known in Roseburg, where be visited o,uito frequeiyly during the past few years. He made his last trip to this city about two weeks ago, when he was entertained by Dr. Seely and other physicians of this vicinity. Speaking of the departure of Mrs. Straw from Marshfield after secur ing her divorce .the Marshlield Times had (lie following to say in a recent Issue: Mrs. Straw left this morning for Santa Rosa again. Dr. Straw went to the depot to bid her goodbye, and rode with her as far as North Rend. A rather unusual Incident occurred at North Bend while the train stopped there. Dr. Straw and Mrs. Straw were talking when Harry Huntley came along. He and Dr. Straw greeted each other and start ed to talk. Then Dr. Straw remem bered that Mr. Huntley and Mrs. Straw hud not met. "I beg pardon, but this is my wife I mean she was until yesterday," said Dr. Straw as he introduced the two. Tho adieu between tho two was that of good friends. It Is understood that a property settlement between them was ar ranged prior to the hearing in the Circuit Court yesterday. Harry Hildebrand and Raymond Ranch pleaded guilty this morning in Justice Taylor's court to the charge of assault and battery, brought by Charles F. Jacobs, says the Medford Sun. Schultz, roadmaster for the Southern Pacific Company, has been promoted to the position of roadmas ter of the" Willamette Pacific Rail road. Mrs. Martha Smith, who spent yesterday in Itosehurg searching for her daughter, Miss Myrtle Smith, left last night for Dunsmulr and other California cities, where she will continue her Investigations. Miss Smith disappeared from the Model Klectrlc Laundry in Seattle on September 29, and nothing has been heard from her since that date. Her mother fears she has fallen into the hands of white slavers and is now located In some Pacific Coast city south of Seattle. A complete de scription of the girl was published in yesterday's Issue of The Review. .MEETING OP CREDITORS. A meeting of t" creditors ot Thomas Klndley, who" recently filed a petition of bankruptcy in the lo cal bankruptcy court, was held in the office of C. L. Hamilton, referee in bankruptcy, this morning. Mr. Klndley s liabilities are in excess of I'lOU. He has no assets, according to the schedules filed with Attorney Hamilton. I.K(i WAS IX.Il'REI). Dr. A. ('. Seely was called to the Southern Pacific depot late Thurs day night lo attend II. Kadderly, a brakeman on the Shasta Limited, who sustained a slight injury to the leg while alighting from a moving traiu near llarrishurg. Although quite painful, tho injuries are not considered serious and the patient will probably be able to resume his duties within the next couple of days. WORK IS PROGRESSING. Work on Roseburg's new high school building is progressing rapid ly, and the bricklaying will probably he completed within the next ten days. A big crew of men is em ployed at (he present time and an efrort will be made to enclose the strurture before the fall rains set in. Unless something unforseen occurs, to retard tho work, the building vlll be in readiness to turn over to the school hoard early In the spring.
