Germans Lose to British North of Combles MANY PRISONERS CAPTURED The French Penetrated Trenches on the Wes' ern Slope of Deadman's Hill -Russian Attacks Were Repulsed REULIN', Sept. 19. It was an nounced that the Germans surren dered trenches to the British east of (linrhy and north of Cotnbles. They repulsed French attacks near llelloy and Vermandovillors, and south of the Somme. The French penetrated trenches on the western slope- of Headman's Hill. The Hermans re pulsed Russian Carpathian attacks, and took 2"i00 prisoners. Seaport Was Taken. SOFIA, Sept. 19. The war office announced that all allied attacks in Fiorina were repulsed. The Bul garians are continuing their advance against the Roumanians in Dobrud ja. They raptured Mammalia, a Blade Sea port, : miles south or Constan za. Rattle in Pi-ogross. PARIS. Sept. 1 It. A violent hat tie is being fought between the Bul garians and Italians east ot the Holes mountains, in Macedonia. PARIS, Sept. 19. It was an nounced that the Hermans delivered five heavy counter attacks in the Champagne region. They attacked I ead man's Hill, but the Russians defending the Champagne section checked all assaults. The Hermans lost heavily on both sides of the Souain-Sommc-Py road. CLir.W III ISKR VOIR. Preparatory to cleaning each of the city reservoirs off South Main street, one of the large tanks was emptied by flushing tho streets in that section this afternoon. The reservoirs are cleaned and disinfect ed every few months. The sides will be treated to a thorough brushing as well as to an application of lime. J. Finch, senior state highway engineer, with headquarters at Portland, will make another trip over the proposed Crater Lake cut off next Thursday, according to word received here today, and ac companying him will be an engineer from Washington, I). C. who will make a detailed examination of the route in behalf of the Government, which is to assist in the project. They will reach this city some time Friday. Mr. Finch, although having made a previous examination of the pro posed short cut, is intending on his nresent inspection to complete tae details and to secure some final data which will be submitted in his re port to the Government officials. Mr. Finch on his former trip was very enthusiastic over the new route and believed the Government would very readily lend its financial .lid. which is made possible through i the recent act par-sod bv Congress ! making available $ 1 0,000.000 for constructing roadways through the forest, reserves. Mr. Finch has charge, of all the engineering for the roads constructed according to the provisions of this act. Forest Supervisor S. C. Gray Mortar Selected by School Board at Noon Today THREE SAMPLES WERE EXHIBITED In the vent of No Furlhcr Trouble Mr. Hunter Expects to Have the Structure Enclosed Before Rains Set In ' After passing practically the en tire morning inspecting and discuss ing the color of mortar to use in lay ing the brick on the new high school building now under construction here, the members of the school board at noon today accepted the gray sample, and ordered John Hun tor, the contra) tor, to adopt nun tar of that color. Actual brick laying on the struc ture began this afternoon and it is believed the work will be completed in :in days. A big crew of men will be employed in th?s work and every effort will be made to have the building enclosed by the time the rains set in this fall. In the event the contractor is successful In this, the structure should be completed and in readiness for occupancy early next spring. In order that the school board might have no trouble in solecting the mortar to be used in laying the brick, Mr. Hunter and Walter Single ton, the latter of whom is employed as inspector on the building, this morning constructed a miniature wall in which the several colors of available mortar were used. Among t he colors were gray, old rose and black . There was some difference ot" opinion expressed by the members of the board, but it was finally agreed to adopt the gray mortar. The bricklayers1 who have the contract to do this part of the work arrived here yesterday, but did not begin ac tual work on the building until noon today. Neither Mr. Hunter nor the members of the school board an ticipate any further trouble, and it is believed the work on the building will progress rapidly and to the sat isfaction of alt concerned. PARENTS AND TEACHERS OF SUTHERUN DiSOJSS MANY SCHOOL MATTERS The Parent-Teacher Association, of Sutherlin, held a most successful reception for the teachers Friday evening in the assembly room of the school.
