As a result of a legal opinion ren
dered by Attorney -General tleorge
M. Ilrowu. in which he held that the
lands of the Oregon & California
Kailroad are not subject to taxation
because of the fact that title to the
same has passed to the Covernnieiit,
liouglas. Coos. Lane and other coun
ties of Southern Oregon will lose
thousands of dollarH annually in
taxed. The opinion whh rendered
by the Attoi ney-l!cneral upon re
quest of the State Tax Commission.
The lands heretofore huve yielded
the slate an annual tax ranging be

"The act reinvests the title held
hy tlie railroad company in the lands
in the Kederal Government, and un
der the laws of this state, as well
as those of the Government, Federal
properly is not subject to taxation,'
said the attorney -genera I, In part.

can he reached, and that Is that the
lands ate not assessable, for to hold
otherwise would he to hold that the
act itself is not valid."
The tax commission said the opin
ion would have no effect on assess
ments of preious years, and that it
