To the Editor: The citizens of Doug'.u County have been invited to attend a cele bration at Tiller next Sunday com memorating the completion of tno first section of the Crater Lake cut on. And it slov v dawns upon you thai those rturdv pioneers have pondered wel their leesons of the benefits to be de rived from the construction of good roads and that they have striven long and earnestly that there may be a new Pacific Highway via Tiller, so that the patriotic citizens of Doug las County in their annual pilgrim ngo to Crater Lake may not be re quired to pay tribute to Medford To this end they have laid a heavy burden of taxation upon themselves and only ask in return that the road be constructed and that they be granted the privilege of doing the werk. You have learned ere this that the road in Douglas County is estimated to cost about lieO.uno, and that aside from bringing a deluge of tourists It will open up the vast timber re sources of the region to exi'lillatton to thi t ti e cost of construction Is rv-Jly unworthy of consideration. And afler this you may learn other things. And you may learn th.it because of the box canyon thru which the road runs from Tiller to j Drew, It IS impossible m gei uiiiei the new road except at the ends That for this reason, people livinr along the old mad befveeo these points will be obliged to maintain the old road as their only outlet since obviously the county could -not be asked to keep up both roads. And then it may occur to you that all tourists traveling through Western Oregon must necessarily go through Douglas County, whether by the present Pacific Highway or via Til le. and that the presence of a few miles of good road in the Klk Creek Canyon is not likely to greatly in crease tourist travel in general. And also that modern timber exploita tion requires railroads rather than tuerj-oads. And now on the Jackson Countv side, do you know that there is talk of building a highway from Med ford to Crater Lake via Hutte Fill mil Pro-pert und that the pres.-n road from Medford bv way of Tru! which is the proposed terminus o the Crater Lake cutoff w ill be ah in don.d as a highway to the Lake? lH) you know that It Is approximately eiclit miles from the Jackson Conn tv line to Trail and about 17 miles from Trail to Prospect? Is it liked then that the Jackson Counly peo ple will co-operate in building this section of the proposed cutoff.
