For more than thirty years the
people of this city and county have
been looking forward to the develop
ment of the vast timber resources
of the North I'mpqua River terri
tory. That enormous latent wealth
exists there has long been realized
That region now has one of the fin
est and largest bodies of merchant
able timber In the whole I'nlted
States. This timber has remained
untouched, and hence without prac
tical value, because of lack of trans
portation facilities. Its volume can
onlv be estimated In the practically
Incomprehensible figures of tens of
Pultuns of feet of lumber, and the
quality is unexcelled. The lumber
market is good and the demand
seems certain to Increase. Therefore
a united effort Is needed to provide
transportation facilities and thus Ret
actual operations started for the cut
tin? and manufacture of this tim
ber without further delay. There
Is plenty of timber in that region to
keep I'd sawmills busy for a lifetime
The first thins needed is for the
local people to provide the means
for transportation and outside capi
tal will build and operate the mills
One big sawmill Is already assured
and it will be ready for operation by
the time the railroad is completed
from Koseburg to Hock Creek. Othei
mills are sure to be established
whenever the railroad is built to the
timber. This is not a matter of
guesswork. It Is well known that
the Kendall Bros. big sawmill oper
ators of Pennsylvania. Maryland and
vir-in'n are able, willing and ready
to build and operate a sawmill at
KoseburK Just as soon as a railroad
is built from here to the great bodies
of timber on the North I'mpqua
River and its tributaries. Other mills
will doubtless be erected in this vl
r'itv n the near future, whenever
the railroad is built.

Harold W. Hunt, who arrived here
Fridpv from the Sunshine Ranch, on
the North t'mpqua River, says tht
young men of that vicinity recently
enjoyed considerable sport In the
way of hunting for coyotes. Preced
ed by a number of dogs belonging to
Walter Osborne, ot the Ml. Altt
Ranch, the boys had started through
the timber a few days ago when they
came upon a den of coyotes. There
were seven animals, including the
mother and six pups. The mother
was killed, while the young members
of the family were taken Into captiv
it y. The latter annuals will prob
ably be killed later.

ful bidder to w hom the contracts are
awarded fail to execute the same
within ten days (not including Hun
day) from the date of notification
of such award, such check shall be
forfeited to Douglas County as liqui
dated damages and the same shall
be the property of the county. All
other certified chocks will be re
turned to the unsuccessful bidders
who submitted same.
A good and sufficient bond with a
satisfactory surety will be required
for the faithful performance of the
construction contract in a sum equal
to the amount of the contract price.
The estimates are approximate
only, being given on a basis for the
comparison of bids, and the County
Court of Douglas County does not
expressly or by Implication agree
that the actual amount of work will
correspond therewith, but reserve:
the right to increase or decrease the
i amount of and class or portion of
the work that may be deemed neces
sary or expedient by the Koad Master
of Douglas County, Oregon.
The right ia reserved to reject any
and all proposals or to accept the
proposal deemed best for Douglas
Countv.
