President is empowered to pick the
site. It is planned to extract nitrate
from the air and sell the surplus for
fertilizer. Terms of enlistment in
the nrmy Is fixed at seven year, hut
captains may dismiss soldiers at the
end of one year if competent.

According to newspaper dispatches
received here today, the Methodists.
i in conference at Saratoga Springs,
-New York, are thinking seriously of
'lining the ban on card playing, at
tending theaters, and dancing. a
recommendation making more lib
eral the views of the church was pre-
seted to the members ot the con
ference by the committee on the
state of the cluireh. H was argued
before the conference that the ban
on card playing, dancing and attend
ing theaters should be removed be
cause the penalty for violation of
these church laws is not enforced.

no doubt be watched with consider
able interest by Methodists in all

John tennis, wife of the Roanoke's
M-cond of fi er. today made flat
charges that the steamer was over
loaded when it left on the fatal voy
age Moday. Mr. Dennis' corpse was
found drifting in a lifeboat yester
day. Mrs. Dennis declared the
Roanoke's interior was sawed away
to make room for an unprecedented
cargo. She said that on Monday a
gang of carpenters remov ed the
iK-ams and braces to make more
loom. She asserted her h usband
did not believe the Roanoke would
arrive at its destination, and prom
ised to (iuit the ship at San Pedro.

The coroner s jury returned a verdict
that the death of five victims of the
Roanoke disaster was caued by cold
and exposure. Three survivors tes
tified that the Roanoke was over
loaded. They said few escaped, he
cause there had been no lifeboat
drills and the sailors were unfamiliar
with their stations. l,opez testified
the wireles dynamo was dismantled.
Roheria swore the Roanoke listed
before leavinnj San Francisco, later
righting herself.

eventually be laid between lioseburg
and Winchester in order to better
care for the patrons of the Douglas
County Light & Water Company. In
this city, was the statement of Wil
, liam Pollman, general manager or

Pollmun and wife arrived here a few
days ago from Raker, and have since

In an interview with a Review rep
resentative last evening, Mr. Pollman
stated he realized the necessity of
a new water main between Koseburg
and Winchester and that the Bame
would be installed wit hin the next

voted for this candidate to place her
in the lead of the three contestants.
This new candidate is Mrs. C. h.
Rargai , a popular matron of the
younger set. and wife ol C. h. Rar
gai. of the Fiiipqua Advertising
Agency. M is. Ha i gar possesses all
ot the qualifications necessary to
till this position with credit to her
self and honor to the carnival, and
will undoubtedly make a strung race

Miss Pickens Is now in second place

Deer Creek, where they inspected the
route of the proposed Hob Lane road.
A petition asking for the location
and construction of t his road wan
presented to tbe County Court some
time ago. and after careful consid
tTatlon the county surveyor was au
thorized lo proceed and survey and
local the said highway. At a later
date the county board of road view
ers were instructed to view the route
and submit t heir report in w rit ing
to the County Court. The report
presented by the viewers was favor
able to the construction of the road.
The proposed new road is about ivo
and one-quarter miles In length, and
wilt probably he accepted at the next
regular meeting of tue County Court
to be held in this city.
