lation is literal, but be earns every
penny of it. Howewr. be 1 not paid
until the end of wie season. The day
on which the show closes, every per
son uith the aggregation gives him
a ' piece ot nione, ' as the circus
fo!k say. From each employe of the
show he receives a sum which may
range anywhere between seventy
five rents and five dollars, the ex- j
ectttUes of course, being more lib j
there are five hundred attaches with
a circus, the mail carrier can figure
than he will receive at hast five
hundred dollars; never less; some
times more. So you see. besides the
regular salary which is paid him for
his services as musical director, he
receives, for his side work, enough
money to perceptibly swell his bank
account.

I. It. Kiddle, justice of the peace,
spent the afternoon in the rural dis
tricts conferring with the voters re
garding his candidacy for district at
torney. Mayor Joseph Bridges, of Oakland,
came over this morning and spent
the day conferring with the voters
regarding his candidacy for county
commissioner.
Mrs. George Skiff went to Win
ston this morning to attend a dinner
party given by the Merry Go Hound
Club of that vicinity at the home of
Mrs. Pert Green.
W. G. Maker, who had been visit
ing foi the past few weeks at Sunny
side, Wash., returned here this mom
ing. He was called there on account
of the illness of some of his rela
tives. Kred Heard came over from Yon
calla this morning to spend a couple
or days, lie only recently returned
to Douglas County after some time
spent at Portland and other northern
points.
Letters received here recently in
dicate that Frank Long, now a resi
dent or California, Is improving. Mr.
Long formerly lived ill Kuseburg and
went to California in hope of bene
fitting his health. He is a brother
of Attorney John T. Long, a well
known resident of this city.
