Kimball bad a lengthy paid article in the Kvening News last Saturday opposing the proposed amendment to our city charier. If all of the citizens of Knseburg ere of the mind of Mr. Kimball, what grow lb would our city make? It is generally believed thai the city has already grown beyond the ability of the surrounding count ry and the S. P. railroad advantages to support. A ery general complaint has been vol. ed for two years or more now that business has not been good. How can business conditions improve in and about our city without the intro duction of some new capital and the institution of some new enterprise? The greatest natural advantages of this section of the state is the timber. That timber will not contribute any to the upbuilding of our city unless it can he manufactured into lumber. Kusebun, is not necessary to the manufacture into lumber of that tim ber and marketing it. That can be done at oilier points as well as it can be done at Koseburg. If Koseburg is to become the center of a great lum ber industry it must go after it. We cannot possibly become the center of the U:i:;u r industry without a rail road connecting Koseburg with the timoer resources. Private capital has seemed unwill ing to construct a railroad from this city to the timber. The Kendall Lum ber Corporation is willing to erect a large sawmill and operate the same nrovidinK there is a way of transport ing the timber from the mountains to tnai sawmill. That corporation has entered into assurances with the Pair t uunds Association that it will ereet um the present fair ground.-; a mill with a minimum capacity of two hund red thousand feet per day and have the same ready for operation as soon as a railroad can be constructed from the purpose of constructing a railroad L' agents from the city to tbe National forest. So wit hint countinc any oth.r benefits directly flowinc from ihe mill, we will have an industry ut KoseburK with a daily pay roll of SIL'"". Considerini: ihai the mill will operate three hundred days a year, the annual pay roll will amount lo ?:!H'i,tnu. The pay roll alone for the thirty years the city has in which to pay the bonds will am'repate the im m.'nse sum of flo.siio.oiio. At the end of that period the city will still own the railroad: it will have received in direct benefits from the sawmill such as the increased traffic over the Southern Pacific ltailroad. which means an added pay roll of that rom ;.an : it no doubt uieuns box factories and other kindred industries. The probabilities are also that other saw mills will bp established at or near llos "burn, furnishing sufficient traffic to the railroad to not only take care of the interest but probably to have I paid tne principal. These figures take I no account of the urowth of the rutin ' try ar.d the Iratfic supplied to the ; railnod as a result, i The citizens in ronsiderinc this proM-;ition mii; hi md lo overlook the fact that tli: timber is there in the mountains; that it must be marketed to bvinii returns to its owners, and that, if Hosebllll!
