V. institute held In Oakland on April 1, by OaklamL Sutherlia and Caiapooia I'nions. and conducted by County Vict- President .Mrs. Tuthill. was a pronounced suc cess, being both instiu. the and very entertaining. Some of the speakers Ironi out ol town were: Mrs. Hattoid. one of our state speakers, who was a great help in conducting the insti tute and gave us some good instruc tion on how to conduct our meet ings. Others were George NVunor, Jr., ot Kosehurg: Prof. Mathews, of Sutli erlin, and liev. Trites, of Sutlierlin. ; Mr. Netiner told us manv thing pertaining to law enforcement, and said lie intended to enforce the law if it took ull the taxes on the farms and then our farms too. which was loudly applauded. Our home speak ers were Mayor Itridges. Itev. I lavis Hickman, Itev. I'roffitt and Prof. Al fred Powers. Mayor Hridges in a short and to the point speech welcomed the visit ors and hid us Cod speed in our vvoik. The ol hers made good taiks on the use of liquors and tohacco an 1 the effc'ets of the same on the body, especially on children. We were also highly entertained bv Mr. and Mrs. Smith, of Sutlierlin. w ith piano ami ioliu music, M r. Smith l ing a wonder with the violin. M rs. Oscar lorrell. of Caiapooia, favoied us with several well rendered vocal solos. Last, but not least, was our own high school girls in a drill conducted by Miss Hell; also a drill hy smaller children. In the evening a silver medal con tent was held with sewn contestants, Frances Henninger receiving the h ighest grade, vv on the medal. The5 judges were Mrs. Tuthill, Caiapooia: Prof. Matin w s, Sutlierlin, and I lev. Pioffitt. Oakland. M is. P. K. Cerber and Mr. X. Plyler were elected to membership in the dub. The in dustries bureau reported through their direc.V. V. 11. Richardson, that an effort is being made to se cure the establishment of a fruit juice factory at Kosehurg, although nothing definite has been learned as yet about the matter. The move ment to secure arbitration of the dif ficulties between the railroad com panies and the employes was brought to the attention of the club by the Portland Chamber of Commerce, and the matter was referred to the legis lative bureau for investigation. Two com munici'.t Ions were received from Coventor Withycombe. assuring the club of his co-operation in the flax experiments which are being con ducted by the Commercial Club, and informing them that the flax seed has been shipped. This seed was re ceived today and will be distributed to the five fanners who have agreed to plant an aire each. This stra.v when harvested, will be ret led at the flax plant at the stale peniten tiary, and upon the results ohiained will hinge the establishment of a similar plant at Kosehurg next vear. Full instructions have been received from Professor llyslop, of Corvaliis. which will be given to the growers. The club still has several copies of the Covernment bulletin on fiber flax, which will he sent to anv one who wishes a copy Tor future refer ence. The buriau of plant industry, has notified Hie club that there is no ( broom com seed available for dis tribution this year by the Comtii iMent. so an effort will be made to Hei ure this s d from other sources.
