Jack, the bearcat and the mankiller, never had a publicity agent, lie never has had a manager who knew the game. He's a self-niade boxer. The only kind of boxing allowed In this town Is the hot Move kind, and when the fans gather around they te!l stories of Finest Cutler Price, , who, as Dillon, has placed Indianap olis on the sport map against her will. Dillon probably is the only top ; notch athlete in any branch who de- liberatoly chose the name of a horse for his own. When Krnest was a skinny kid, he used to frequent the barn where Kidney Dillon, sire of a long string of good trotters, held forth. Mis friendship for the horse caused him to take that name. Jack Is a silent fighter, too. Ho gets into the toughest contest and never says a word. He keeps his head down and works silentlv, de pending on his rnggednejs and fight ing spirit to win. When you find .Iu"k on the street he's silent. When askeil nhotit a fight, with set jaw and a gh-atn in his eye he remorks: "I'm going into that fight to knock him out." Jack always tries for a knockout. W hen the sport hoys down east refused to "see" Jack, his friends tried to argue him into tak ing on a new manager, but Jack steadfastly refused to drop his old friend, Sam Murharger. Only the home guard knew what It meant to Dillon to knock out Tom Cowler, Jim Corhett's protege. Me was little more than a welter weight and unknown outside the city. His friends got him the chance for a try-out against the great Corbett. Dillon showed enough to make Cor bett take off his gloves and forget his come bark aspirations, but in do ing ?o he seemingly acquired the for mer champ's enmity. Thus Dillon got more out of the fight than showed on the sur face, for he floored the man Corbett w as groom I ng for the heavy weight championship. Jack was 2.J the day he met Cowler. Dillon's record, though fraught with knockouts, is an eccentric docu ment conforming to the moods of a temperamental tighter. The Hoosier lad has changed in recent months and became more businesslike, but in the earlier seasons of his fighting career It was well known In fighting circles that If Jack Dillon didn't feel like fighting In- wouldn't fight. On the other hand he frequently went into the ring ' eling rocky and vented his crouch on the luckless weight before him.
