Paris, Feb. 22. Seven German battalions captured
more than a half mile of first line French trenches, and also
becond line trenches at many points in the Eois and Given
chy regions, so it is officially admitted. Counter attacks to
deceive the invaders were mrd: from practically all sec
tions of the lines. The Germans lost heavily. After gas
and artillery attacks for several heirs the Germans
charged. Cannon had destroy d t'.;e LrH line trenches ai
many points. Afterwards the Teutons used 8000 men in
successive attacks along a front of less than a mile. Shrap
nel, machine gun fire and explosive shells from the French
lines caused heavy losses in the ranks of the attackers.
Counter attacks by the French were conducted from third
line trenches.
