Paris, Aug. 21. The greatest battle in the Belgian
campaign, and perhaps in the world's history, is believed
sure to start soon between the French and Germans near
Brussels. It is thought likely there has already been out
post clashes. According to the general staff, the expected
engagement will not be a mere incident. It is counted on
to result in the complete checking of the German advance.
Not much could be learned, owing to the strictness of the
censorship. The French operations in Lorraine, it is stated,
are delayed pending the completion of the movement in
ANTWERP IN STATE OF SIEGE.
Antwerp, Aug. 21. Antwerp is in a state of siege. It
is said that foreigners will be asked to leave, which they
can easily do by water to France or England. King Albert
and the general staff are here. The forts are manned. De
tails of the Belgians' plans for defense are withheld, but it
is known they were carefully mapped out in advance.
The Belgian main body's retirement from Brussels to
Antwerp is considered to eliminate them from further oper

New York, Aug. 21. Reports published in morn
ing newspapers to the effect that Anna Sarto, sister
of Pope Pius, had died yesterday from grief, are un
founded, according to telegraphic advices received
from the Vatican today. Although grieved over the
loss of her brother, Anna Sarto is in no serious dan
ger at the present time.

Rome, Aug. 21. Cardinal Delia Volpe is at the head
of the Roman Catholic Church. As Cardinal Camerlengo,
the papal authority passed automatically into his hands fol
lowing Pius' death. He took formal possession of the
fisherman's ring, the insignia of office, on Thursday. He
will retain the position until a new Pope has been elected
by the college of cardinals. At 9 o'clock the Pope's body
was removed from the Vatican throne room to the chapel
of sacrament at St. Peter's. This violated a tradition and
a precedent, but the Pope said he did not wish his corpse to
remain the customary three days in the throne room for
exclusive visits by the cardinals, nobility, diplomats and
other privileged classes, but desired it exposed immediately
for the rch and the poor to see.
POPE'S BODY IS EXPOSED.
Rome, Aug. 21. The Pope's body was exposed to pub
lic view in the chapel of sacrament only six hours, as it is
not yet embalmed, and was then placed in a temporary
tomb at St. Peter's to await further ceremonial.
