RAILROAD MEN ARE CAUTIONED Public is Invited to View the Exhibit Which Will be on tisplay Here For S.veral Days Safety Appliances Featured The Southern Pacific's Safety Ex hibit on display in the laud office building at the corner of Washington and Jackson streets, is attracting and interesting a large number of visitors. The exhibit is comprised of 150 en larged photographs and statistical charts showing those factors which have been greatest in the attainment n t'-e wonderful record of having carried during the last five years two hundred million passengers an aver i distance of 4. miles without a single fatality due to train collision, derailment or other train accident. Accompanying the exhibit is an oper ative miniature model of the auto matic block and interlocking signals. The demonstrations upon signal con trol are given by V. S. Amlrus, from the offices of President Sproule. The Southern Pacific Co. in its campaign for the conservation of h ii mini life lays especial stress upon the following facts and asks that the public answer the "Appeal for As sistance" by using greater care when riding upon railroad trains and cross ing tracks at grade. In the United Stales nearly all per sons losing their lives on railway premises are trespassers. If records of recent vears maintains 14 people were killed yesterday, 11 will be killed todav and 1 4 tomorrow. .Mr. Andrus, in discussing the care lessness of the public at grade cross ings, makes the following statement: Tmler tho direction of V. Men I were stationed at various railroad crossings to observe what precaution ary action was taken by automobile ; drivers, teamsters and pedestrians be- fore crossing tracks at grade. I he result of these observation wero compiled into a detailed state ment which showed in an astonishing way that but one tenth of one per cent of the 2,utl0 teamsters, auto mobile drivers and pedestrians ob served, stopped and looked in both directions before crossing the tracks; that 30 per cent looked in one direc tion only and did not stop and that till per cent of the automobile drivers took absolutely no precaution what ever but crossed the tracks without stopping or looking In either direc tion. This gross carelessness was in evidence at crossings where train movements were being made at the rale of one every ten minutes." "By far the most astonishing fact revealed by these observations was that of the number of cases where stop signals given by the crossing flagmen were utterly ignored by the teamsters and automobile drivers. Accident records show that several fatalities have resulted from acci dents caused by the flagmen's signals not being observed. "Stop, look and listen is the cheap est and best form of accident Insur ance known, and with the more gen eral adoption of the practice will come a decrease in grade crossing accidents."
