trict Court yesterday by H. I. Town
send In the "trial of V. K. Minard, of
Portland, and J. W. l.ogan and K. J.
Sellers, of Tacotna. accused of fraudu
lently selling "locations" on lands
within the grant.
Mr. Townsend' was the last Im
portant testimony of the trial, and
shortly after it was given the Govern
ment rested its case. The defendants
also rested, and the first step in the
proceedings that probably will send
the case to the Jury late today was
tiiken with the opening statement of
District Attorney Heames, who de
clared that the liovernment was clear
ly entitled to a verdict of guilty as
against all three of the defendants.
Mr. Townsend, as sjieclal assistant
to the Attorney-General, was in
charge of the c.overnment's success
ful suit against the railroad company
for the forfeiture of the lands, and
came from Wyoming to be a witness.
He resigned as special assistant last
April to enter private practice.
