The sermon at the big court yard
tent last night was on the topic "Not
Far From the Kingdom," und It was
preached to a deeply-Interested audi
ence. From night to night the in
terest grows, and some wiio in the
beginning thought the evangelist
might have been a little more gentle
in speech at times, are now realizing
that he knew what he was doing, and
that he was preparing the ground
for those strong gospel appeals which
lie is now delivering, and which are
taking people to the front night after
night to take the stand for the Chris
tian life. It was especially gratify
ing last night to see six fine young
men standing In the row of those who
went forward at the close of the ser
mon. The text was Mark 12:34, "And
when Jesus saw that he answered
discreetly, he said unto him, 'Thou
are not far frojn the kingdom ot
God. Wise and exemplary
scribe," said Mr. Taylor, "but there
is no evidence that he was ever saved.
Felix trembled and said, 'When 1
have a more convenient season 1 will
call for thee,' but he never did.
Moral, exemplary, wise, but lost. How
many thousands there are in the
world today who are not far from the
kingdom of Ood but who are not yet
within it.
"The man who stands for a square
deal with man and Ood is not far
from the kingdom. The lodge is
good, it helps some, It means fra
ternity, mutual protection, but being
a Mason, or an Odd Fellow, or a
Knight of Pythias is not the same
thing as being a Christian. No lodge
claims to take the place of Christian
ity. The church of Jesus Christ
stands alone, it is absolutely unique
in the world.
"The good moral man does not
have to go far to got into the king
dom, but he has to go. The lodges
go for the best men in the commun
ity; they do not reach out after the
tramps, the drunkards, the fallen wo
men they want the cream of so
ciety, of business, of politics. Men
are in business for profit, but why
are the churches In business? What
do they get? Absolutely nothing.
Men go down into their pockets and
keep the churches open for the bene
fit of humanity, lending a hand to
the fallen women, putting out an arm
to lift up the drunkard, to help the
little child and the outcast. The
church is the one institution that
cannot be explained by natural law,
that r-annot be explained by any
other motive than devotion to Jesus
Christ, who came into the world to
seek nnd to save that which was lost,
and said, 'It is more blessed to give
than to receive.'
"The man who is honest in seeking
light Is not far from the kingdom. If
you are seeking to do God's will He
will give you light, brother. Uut how
are you seeking light? There are
other ways than through the five
senses. If you only believe the things

sign of the resurrection of the dead,
they had seen the lepers cleansed,
and yot they said, 'Show us a sign
from Heaven.' Suppose they had seen
a sign, do you suppose they could
have interpreted it? If (iod would
show you a sign from Heaven tonight,
do you suppose you would be able to
interpret it? The Bible is my sign.
The promises are my assurance.
"The sincere skeptic is not far
from the kingdom, 'if any man will
do my will, he shall know the doc
trine.' Did you ever try it? If you
do you will be convinced. (Jod can't
show you unless you are willing. It
may be more conclusive to a man's
reasoning faculties that the area or
a polygon is the number of scientific
units it contains, than to believe that
his mother loves him, but down deep
in the human heart one Is just as true
us the other. In the criminal law,
which takes away a man's life or lib
erty, the proof must show guilt be
yond a reasonable doubt, but In the
civil law, where life and liberty are
not involved, proof by a preponder
ance of the evidence is sufficient.
Christianity does not take away u
man's life or liberty. It means a
larger liberty for every man in right
eousness. Therefore, Christianity is
a case to be settled by the prepon
derance of the evidence. The pre
ponderance of the world's testimony
is on the side of Christianity. The
mind of man Is a pendulum, swing
ing between credulity on the one side
and doubt on the other. The intelli
gent Christian faith is the golden
mean between the two. We must not
expect to understand everything.
You cannot understand your own na
ture, which is a complexity of spirit,
soul, life, body. You don't under
stand it, but you don't need to com
mit suicide on that account. You
can't understand how a sheep, a hog
and a goose, eating the same grass,
have, one wool, one bristles, and the
third feathers. A thousand un
answerable mysteries In nature can
be brought up paradoxes and yet
we go on believing them. Why
should we not believe the mystery
of the gospel? You don't need to
know, all the mysteries of the Itible
in order to be a Christian. Faith is
absolutely indigenous to the human
heart. Every man believes naturally.
There is no nation of infidels. An
infidel is an exception to the rule.
"The man who is also seeking a
bona fide experience Is not far from
the kingdom. The real, honest, bona
fide Christian experience is to be
found in faith and obedience. Dif
ferent persons have different ways of
showing conviction. There was Nico
demus, who came to Jesus by night.
Another might prefer to come in the
day time.
"If you would only deliver the tal
ent that God has given you to Jesus
Christ, he would beat back the tidal
waves of hell with it.
"The blind men were not healed
by Jesus alt In the same way, but
they all got their eyes open. Your
experience may not accord with mine;
mine may not accord with yours, but
we know whom we have believed. We
know our Redeemer lives and we
trust In Htm. Kxperienee is the re
sult of action. You say you have no
experience. Try doing your duty and
see what will happen.
"The man who counts the cost Is
not far from the kingdom. Hut say,
brother, don't take forever and a day
to count It. Figure it up. And re
member there Is something to count
on the other side. Religion costs us
self-denial, but sin costs us destruc
tion. It Is said that one in five fail
In business, but poeple go right on
iroing into business just the same.
Figure up the cost, but take a chance
on tiod. Start do your best.
"The man who Is a just censurer of
the church's inconsistency is not far
from the kingdom. Jesus himself
did that. The severest words He ever
used were used againts the scribes
and the Pharisees, the hypocrites of
His day, the members of the church.
Uut nevertheless Jesus had Judas as
one of His disciples, and you will find
a few blnck sheep in all your or
ganizations. To avoid them you will
have to leave the lodge and the club
and the state and the nation, yes,
you will have to get off the earth.
And hell is full of them. You come
in and help the church to clean
house. The man who spends time
counting hypocrites makes the mis
take when he don't place himself at
the bead of the list.
"The man who lives a clean, moral
life is not far from the kingdom. One
thing he lacks, confession of Jesus
Christ. You say you believe in Christ
j hut you don't belong to the church.
Suppose everybody was Just like you,

organized Christianity, the very thing
you profess to live. All that Is don
here In these meetings Is due to or
ganized Christianity in Roseburg. If
you are leading a righteous life, your
place Is in the church.
