The vegetation which furnlshea the
grazing crop has much the same growth
requirements aa a farm crop. .No
farmer who hoes to realUe the best
returns from a permanent hay mead
ow, It la stated, would think of har
vesting the crop aa soon aa It la tall
enough to cut, regardless of whether
or not It la ma lure. Nor would he
grasw a permanent pasture closely
from the time the growth begins un
til It ceases, for ho knows that tbla
will result finally in killing It out. And
since climate and soil conditions over
much of the western grazing lauds are
lesa favorable to plant growth than
those on the average farm even great
er care must be exercised lu utilizing
the range crop thau la uecessury wllu
that on the farm.
The remedy suggested for range de
terioration Is a aysteui of deferred
grazing. Under such a plan an over
grazed portion of the range, aulllciently
largo to supply the forage from the
time of seed maturity until the end of
the grazing Beasoti, is protected from
stock until thu seed crop has matured.
UHn maturity of the aeed crop the
forage la gntzed during the first sea
aou, but not to the extent or injuring
aeed plants. The same area Is protect
ed In the same way during the second
and, if necessary, subsequent seasons,
or until the new plants have been
securely established. When the area
has been thoroughly reseeded It can
be again grazed early lu the season,
and n second area, large enough to ac
commodate the stock from the time of
seed rliienlng to the end of the season,
is protected until the forage Is mature.
By tills method of alternating late
grazing from one area to another
weakened vegetation can recover Ita
vitality without the need of having the
land closed to grazing the entire year.

ample and not only healthful, but de

For over half the year the climate Is

this city of over a million people with
out expressing astonishment that both
Its beauty and Its greatness are not
more widely understood.
"The condition of the poorer people
Is, I am assured and as I thoroughly
believe, far removed from the misery
of the alum dwellers In the great cities
of the northern hemisphere. There Is
no especial quarter for the poor, noth
ing lu the nature of a slum district,
and there Is much effort of one kind
and another to provide decent living

What Is the matter with lacrosse''
It is speedy and exciting from the
spectators' viewpoint, und it Is not dlf
ticult to gain a knowledge of the tine
points of the game. Critics of the
sport have alleged that It is brutal;
but, while minor Injuries are more or
less frequent, the record of lacrosse In
rtimrd to serious accidents and fatall
ties is much cleaner thau that of base
ball, boxing, football or almost any
other strenuous sport. Professionalism
Is charged by some Canadian critics
with responsibility for the decline of
the game, but baseball, soccer, hockev
and other sports have survived and
(loiirlshed under a professional regime.
The facts of the matter seem to lie
that lacrosse leis everything a game
should have to enlist popular support
except publicity If the newspapers
took up lacrosse It would soon become
popular.
Braves' Poor Percentage Explained.
The mystery of the poor percentage
so far achieved by the Iloston itiaves
has been explained at last. Most of
the critics had expected (hat club with
Stalliugs for teacher and Fvers for
agitator to accomplish wonders and
cannot understand w by It has fallen
down It's easily understood, however,
according to l.ee Ma gee of St. I.onis.

Singularly Free From the Disease.

The survey was under the direction
of Past Assistant Surgeou A. U. Fos
ter and shows the disease exists only
In isolated localities. Conditions were
found to be better than in the moun
tain sections of Kentucky, West Vir
ginia and Virginia, where the disease
also exists.
Of Hi.wurv persons examined In the
two states only thirty-four were found
to have the disease. Most of ttiese
cases were on the Cherokee Indian res
ervation In Swalu county. N. C. twen
ty cases being located In that county,
practically all or whivti were traced to
the reservation sehoot.
The survey disclosed that negroes
are singularly free from the disease.
Foreign immigration does not seem to
be responsible for the malady, as Im
migrants are free from It. Practical
ly all the sufferers were native born.
In the white and colored schools for
the blind at Italelgh only one case or
trachoma was found. Consequently
the disease la not regarded as beiuv
widespread lu the state-
