Together tho three officers jumped into Sheriff nutomobile and hastened t Oakland. They had hardly reached j there when they noticed Deputy ! Sheriff lloggett and Marshal Kruse I coming along the county road from j the north. The prisoner was then hastened to the Southern Pacific depot and placed aboard the northbound local train. Vaughn was I accompanied to Salem by both Sheriff Gage and Deputy Sheriff Comlron. As soon as the hobo, who was probably responsible for Vaughn s ar- rest, was informed that he would re- j seive liberal compensation for tip ping' off the escaped convict, ho agreed to accompany the officers to his place of hiding. The trio had walked but a short distance north of Oakland, when Vaughn and two transients were noticed lying behind some hushes. As soon as the fugitive saw the officers approaching he jumped up and started down an em bankment. At the base of the em bankment was a stream into which ho plunged.
