my opinion the peoplo outside the
county of .Multnomah will vote dry
two to one at the coming November
election, and the vote muy be so
strong . that It will overcome that
county and Oregon will have prohl
bllion. While the prohibition party
held u state convention and endorsed
curtain men, still they are so well
organized that they could pass the
word along at any time and endorse
certain candidates within the pri
mary of either party, and the dry
vote would no to thorn. Therefore,
In my opinion, they simply voted In
a body within the Republican and
Democratic primaries outside of
Multnomah County for the man
whom they thought would stand
firmly for state and National prohi
bition. Thoy reasoned that W. C.
Ilawley, having been a Molhodlst all
his life, would stand for National
prohibition und would. If nominated,
and elected, when called upon intro
duce a bill for National prohibition.
"Ered Hollister, the Democratic
primary candidate for Congress, hav
ing published In the press that It
elected he would stand for National
prohibition, was nominated by a
large majority. Dr. Wlthycombe,
who has been u temperance man all
bis life and who was known to favor
both state nnd National prohibition,
led In the race for Governor by a
lurge majority. Dr. Smith, who was
(iovernor West's choice for Governor
nnd who it is supposed stood for pro
hibition, led his competitors in the
race.
"The sooner the prohibition ques
tion is settled the better It will be
for social, business nnd political mat
ters. It is disturbing everything from
a Fourth of July celebration to a
country fair. Communities nnd
families nro divided upon this ques
tion, nnd if It is not soon sottled one
way or tho other the people of Ore
gon will be so worked up over It that
it is going to-scrlotisly nffect all busi
ness matters, and Instead of working
for a greater Oregon we will all be
too busy with the liquor question to
hold our own with other great West
orn states."

sisted occasionally by ltev. W. H.
Katon. The weather yesterday was

turned out, as well as many from
elsewhere. Including a lare delega
tion from Koseburtf. ltev. Short
preached the morning sermon which
was followed hy a bountiful basket
dinner. Kev. V. 11. Katon assisted
at the afternoon service, after which
the two ministers baptised 21 new
members, this ceremony taking place
at what is known as tho Wlmberly
ford, at th boyhood home of the
writer, who was present on this most
impressive occasion. Four ot hers
are to be baptised there two weeks
hence.
Among those present were "I'ncle
John" Chapman, who will celebrate
his 8 1Mb birthday on August l-,
lit 14, and his pioneer friend and
neighbor. A. A. Kugels, who Is also
well past SO years old, but is slill
quite active. It was an occasion long
to be remembered.
