F. 0. Worley, of Roseburg, spent
several days here this week visiting.
Alex Dubell was among those who
attended the circus at Roseburg
Tuesday.
Several Days Creek people went to
Roseburg Tuesday to attend the cir
cus. B. F. Bumott has had a very suc
cessful season so tar with his chicken
raising. With a hutch of more than
900 he has lost about three per cent.
Mrs. W. II. Hartley, Mrs. Harvey
Q. Brown, Hert Hartley, A. R. Marsh
and Ed. Riddle went to Roseburg in
the Hartley auto Saturday on busi
ness and pleasure.
Buffalo Bill tW. F. Cody), one of
the principal features of interest In
the Sells-Kloto-Huffalo Hill circus at
Roseburg Tuesday, is a first cousiu
of our local resident, C. R. Barnhart.
Dave Lenox, who is now located at
Klamath Falls, passed through Mon
duy by auto ou his way home, uftei
visiting at Roseburg and Winstons.
A number of Riddle pennants have
been mado by the band boys, each
bandman to wear a pennant on his

Roseburg Strawberry Carnival.
The rattlesnake which killed the
dog last week at (Jleubrook, was
brought in to Lcgsdon Bros.' Btore
Monday and put on exhibition. It
measured 4 feet, 7 (4 Indies In
length, and was about three Inches
in diameter at the thickest part. Its
rattles had been broken, but a dozen
of them still remained intact.
Harvesting of the strawberry crop
at Glenbrook Farm from the 15-acre
patch is now in full swing. More
than 2000 crates of first grade ber
ries have already been shipped, most
of them going to the Portland mar
ket where prevailing prices are re
ceived. Max Kruse is making good
on his venture.
Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Riddle expect
to leave next Saturday on an ex
tended auto trip to the south. First
thev will visit relatives at Central
Point and Medford for

and will then go to the Klamath Hot
Springs at Shovel Creek, where Mrs.
Riddle will try tne springs tor renei
from rheumatism. They will proo
ablv go from there as far south as
Toft, California, for a visit with
their daughter, Mrs. C. F. Stauffer,
who Is with her husband there in the
oil mining operations. Mr. and Mrs.
Riddle will probably be gone the
greater part of the summer.
Orrin Thompson, deputy game war
den, was here last week for a brief
stay. He recently did a valuable
piece of work in capturing nets con
taining Chinook salmon in the North
Umpqua at the Winchester power
plant, and the prospect is that the
flagrant violations of the law which
have been carried on there will have
to cease.
Clay Clam, who has the Montgom
ery ranch on the soum unipquu
leased from Wollenberg Bros., was
business visitor nt Roseburg Mon
day. On this ranch is a 4u-acre
prune orchard. 3o acres of wnicn is
Italians, and tho entire orcnarci is
loaded with a bumper crop of fruit.
Mr. Ulam says from the present out
look they will dry between 120,000
and 1 00,000 pounds of prunes. Sev
eral crops were sold at Riddle during
the past week at 8 lie, orchard run,
among them being that of Lewis
Hanks, near Canyonville. whose ten-
acre orchard of Italians is so heavily
loaded that ho Is already propping
the branches to keep them from
breaking.
Miss Ethel Quine, daughter of
Sheriff and Mrs. George K. Quine,
has been elected queen of the Rose
burg Strawberry Carnival, having In
the neighborhood of S'iO.OOO votes
more than her nearest competitor.
Miss CJulne's election Is a matter of
gratification to her many friends nt
Riddle, who have all been loyal in
their support.
Johnny Cornutt was again equal to
the occasion and for the fourth con
secutive time won tho gold medal in
the weekly shoot of the Riddle Rifle
Club, closing last Sunday evening. A
few days previous F. H. llerrington
had made a score r 13 and 3-1 3th
Inches, which was the best score that
had been made up lo dale. But
Johnny "come hack" Saturday with
a string only 9 ami 13-litli inches,
for five shots 100 yards off-band. The
consolation trophy was awarded to
Bert Hartley.

veniences. Fred Stusy has the con
tract for the work, which is now well
under way. There is no town in thu
state of comparative size which has

Tho initial work of clearing the
grounds for the Second Annual Veni
son Harbecue of the Riddle Rod &
Gnu Club was taken up last Sunday
forenoon by the members of the club.
A considerable force attacked the
brush and other debris in the Cedur
Grove on the banks of Cow Creek
near town and accomplished consid
erable. Another duy will be set soou
for completion of the work, which
will put the beautiful grounds In fine
shape. Plans for the big sportsmen's
celebratloti, which is gaining state
wide Interest, are going steadily for
ward, and this year's event will far
excel last year's Initial event. He
sides eight monster buck deer which
will be barbecued whole, It is the
plan to provide sliced venison iu the
raw state so that all who wish may
bring their frying pans and cook tho
meat to suit themselves, or roast it
on sharp sticks over camp fires. The
annual shotgun and rifle shoots for
the club trophies will also attract
gunmen from all over the coast. A
day and night platform bowery dance
Is also a new feature that will be
worked ont this year. A big parade
with all club members In line will he
provided. The date of the barbecue
has been set for Monday, Sept. 7,
which is Labor Day, a National holi
day. That Riddle will shortly be lighted
by electricity is now the very prob

chinery for tiie latter business.
Messrs. Vaughn and Geer will manu
facture boxes from pine bolts which
will be bought from local peoplo ut
their plant here, cut from the native
pine Into bolts from two feet lengths
and shorter. The prices offered at
nresent for this kind of timber is
said to he bettor than the ordinary
cord wood price.
