May 1 B Election re turns from abroad in the state indi cate that there is a very close race between Dr. ('. J. Smith, of Portland, and Judge A. S. Bennett, of The Dalles, for the Democratic nomina tion for Governor, with a margin at present in favor of Smith. For tbe Republicans Dr. James Withycombe. of Corvallis, leads in the state by a comfortable plurality, while Gus Moser, of Portland, carried Multno mah County. John Manning, of Port land, Is a poor third In the Demo cratic gubernatorial contest, while Colonel Robert A. Miller and G. A. Cobb trail far in tbe rear. Smith carried Multnomah County by over 100 votes, but with reports delayed from tbe slate at large, tbe result will apparently be uncertain mini the last county reports are In. Later Election Itoixirts. PORTLAND, 3 P. M. Incomplete returns from all but- four counties seemed to indicate that Smith is nominated for Governor over Ben nett, but tbe race is exceedingly close. Smith's apparent lead at 2:30 today was about 2000, but there is a pos sibility that this will be overcome by the later returns from the Willam ette Valley, especially Marion and Lane counties, where Bennett Is strong. Smith carried Multnomah by approximately 600. Although Geo. M. Brown was bested in Multnomah County for Attorney-General by Frank Grant, he Is running two to one ahead of Grant in tbe rest of tbe state. Grant is about tied with Wm. P.
